Pirates Blank The Captains To Stay Perfect At Home

East Carolina University (ECU) PiratesGREENVILLE, N.C. Feb. 24, 2012 - The East Carolina men’s tennis team remained unbeaten at home Friday with a 7-0 win over the Christopher Newport Captains. The Pirates dropped only two matches all day at the Indoor Tennis Center to improve to 8-3 overall this season.

The duo of John Schmitt and Patriek Wolterbeek had the first win for the Pirates, beating CNU’s Kyle Tobin and Robbie Wagner, 8-1 at No. 3. The tandem of Niels Cleeren and David Masciorini clinched the doubles point in favor of the Pirates, as they had a win in the No. 2 spot over Gianandrea Heyer and Thomas Whaling, 8-3. At No. 1 doubles, Joran Vliegen and Nicolas Soriano defeated Matt King and Eric Shulman to complete the sweep.

Singles saw ECU take all six wins, dropping only two sets along the way. Schmitt rallied for a set down at the No. 1 spot to beat Shulman (3-6, 6-3, 6-1). Soriano also had a three set battle in the No. 2 spot, as he beat Heyer after dropping the first set, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2. Damien Brenard downed King in straight sets at No. 3 (6-2, 6-2), while Cleeren took out Tobin at No. 4 (6-0, 6-2) and Masciorini defeated Joey Manilla at No. 5 (6-2, 6-1).

Sophomore Mario Martinez posted a win at the bottom of the lineup with a straight set victory over Wagner (7-6, 6-2).
