CONWAY, South Carolina – Freshman Maddie McCormick scored in the 71st minute to propel UNCW to a 1-0 victory over Coastal Carolina in collegiate women’s soccer action Thursday at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field.
The Seahawks improved to 5-2-1 overall as they picked up their fifth straight victory to match the program’s longest winning streak since the 2009 season. The Chanticleers moved to 3-4-0 overall with the one-goal setback.
McCormick broke the scoreless deadlock at the 71:07 mark of the contest, taking a feed from senior Stephanie Rose in the middle of the box before burying the ball just inside the left post for her first collegiate tally.
The Chanticleers pressed for an equalizer in the final minutes, getting off three shot attempts during the last five minutes of regulation, but UNCW kept Coastal Carolina off the board to record its third straight shutout.
Senior keeper Caitlin Hunter made three saves for the Seahawks to post her third shutout of the season and the 10th clean sheet of her career. Junior Megan Spencer notched four stops in goal for the Chanticleers.
The Seahawks held a 14-12 shot advantage in the contest, including a 10-7 edge in the second half. UNCW also enjoyed a 4-3 margin in corner kicks taken.
