Charlotte Knights Lose Game Three 4-1, Season Comes to a Close

Charlotte Won 83 Games During the Regular Season

– The 2012 season was a memorable one for the Charlotte Knights. The club won 83 games during the regular season, promoted 17 players to the Chicago White Sox, and went all the way to the Governors’ Cup Finals for the first time in 12 years.

On Thursday, in game three of their best-of-five series with the Pawtucket Red Sox, it all came to an end.

Nelson Figueroa allowed just one run on seven hits over six innings, and the PawSox went on to become the 2012 Governors’ Cup champions with a 4-1 victory over the Charlotte Knights at Knights Stadium in Fort Mill, SC. The PawSox ended up sweeping the series from the Knights – the first time all year that Charlotte was swept by an opponent.

Figueroa was also the winning pitcher against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees on September 8 to send the Pawtucket Red Sox to the Governors’ Cup Finals

In all, the Knights had seven hits and scored their only run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Carlos Sanchez RBI single. It was their first run after 18-straight scoreless innings in the series.

Charlotte starter Scott Carroll allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits over 6.1 innings and was saddled with the loss. Carroll struck-out seven batters on the night. Santos Rodriguez and Brandon Kloess combined to tossed 2.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen.

Josh Phegley, who received the 1st Annual Charlotte Knights Community Service award before the game, finished the 2012 playoffs with a .346 batting average. Greg Golson and Jared Mitchell each had two hits for Charlotte on Thursday.

Overall between the regular season and the playoffs, the Knights won a remarkable 86 games. Charlotte took over first place on Tuesday, June 5 and never looked back. From June 5 through the end of the regular season, the Knights were in first place for 90-straight days.

The Charlotte Knights will return to Knights Stadium in Fort Mill, SC for the 2013 season in early April. The entire 2013 schedule will be released next week.
