ECU Swimming and Diving Concludes Weekend With Two Top-3 Finishes In Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. Oct. 7, 2012 – The East Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams posted a combined nine medal performances at the season-opening, two-day All-North Carolina Invitational, which concluded Saturday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

The ECU women concluded the meet in second-place overall, tallying 1,383 points to finish 180 points behind NC State (1,563), while the men took third behind NC State (1,556) and Duke (1,197) with 1,095 points.

“This was a terrific way to start the season,” Pirate head coach Rick Kobe said. “We had some great early season and I’m very pleased with our overall performance this weekend.”

Individually, freshman Bailie Monahan paced the Pirates with four medal finishes. Monahan tied for first-place in the 200 IM (2:08.61) and finished third in the 200 fly (2:06.30). She was also part of the bronze medal 200 and 400 medley relay teams.

She was joined on both relay teams by junior Anna Gibas and senior Holly Berenotto, while senior Elizabeth Oliver was part of the 400 relay team and freshmen Megan Sellers competed on the 200 relay squad.

Sophomores Lauren Chew (17:32.72) and Megan Rossi (17:37.44), finished second and third in the 1650 free with classmate Lauren Gray placing second in the 200 fly (2:05.64).

Sophomore Rokas Cepulis and Daniel Woods recorded the lone medal finishes for the ECU men. Cepulis touched first in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.71), while Woods earned second-place in the 100 fly (51.89). The Pirates will open their dual meet season Oct. 20 against Davidson at Minges Natatorium.
