The Pirates and Owls will square off at 2 p.m.
GREENVILLE, N.C. Oct. 13, 2012 – The East Carolina volleyball team heads to Tudor Fieldhouse on the campus of Rice University to battle it out with Conference USA foe Rice Sunday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. The Pirates (1-17, 0-7 C-USA) are coming off of a 3-0 (20-25, 13-25, 26-28) loss against Houston on Friday.
East Carolina and Rice (13-9, 6-2 C-USA) will meet for the 11th time in program history and Rice leads the all-time series with a 7-3 record. Last season, Rice swept ECU on back-to-back days in Houston and the Pirates are now looking to even the score as they have not defeated the Owls since 2007, when they win in five-sets at Rice.
ECU is led defensively by Shelby Beasley who has totaled a team-best 276 digs and is averaging 4.25 digs per set which is good for fifth in the conference. Against conference opponents, Beasley is averaging 5.32 digs per set which ranks her second in the league. Nicole Willis is the offensive team leader as the junior right side has knocked down 181 kills to average 3.48 kills per set. She has also tallied 148 digs (2.85 digs per set), 25 total blocks, and 12 service aces. Junior Hannah Allgood has recorded 127 kills and 187 digs to help pace the Pirates, while senior Kelly Derby leads the team in blocks with 70 to average 1.08 blocks per set which ranks fourth in Conference USA. Sophomore Zarah Cecich has tallied 377 assists to average 6.85 assists per set, while junior Kasey Kavanaugh has amassed 162 assists for a 4.05 assists per set average.
