HATTIESBURG, Miss. Oct. 21, 2012East Carolina scored a pair of goals in the first 12 minutes and cruised to a 3-1 win over host Southern Miss Sunday afternoon in Conference USA women’s soccer action. With the win the Pirates improve to 9-6-3 overall and 5-2-3 in league play, while the Golden Eagles drop to 4-11-1 on the season and 1-8 in C-USA.

Senior Chrissy Gratz put the Pirates up 1-0 early in the match scoring in the seventh minute. The Sunrise, Fla. native beat USM’s keeper one-on-one at the edge of the 18-yard box and rolled a shot into an open net for her fifth goal of the season. Fellow classmate Caty Butler was credited with her second assist of the year on the play.

“What a great team effort today rebounding from Friday night,” said ECU Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth. “Caty [Butler] and Chrissy [Gratz] were active up top and created good scoring chances for us.”

Hali Oughton scored four minutes later on a penalty kick staking the Pirates to a 2-0 lead for what would be the seniors second game-winner of the year and third of her career.

Butler netted he second goal of her senior campaign putting ECU up 3-0 in the 61st minute when she placed a well timed shot from seven yards out to the left corner of the box beating Lindsey Schwaner. Gratz and true freshman Kendall Frey collaborated on the run, each being credited with an assist.

USM’s Danica Roberts foiled junior keeper Christiane Cordero’s potential 10th shutout in the 86th minute scoring on a penalty kick to pull within two, 3-1. Cordero stopped two of three USM shots on goal in 90 minutes of action and posted her 29th career victory in net. Schwaner posted six saves and allowed all three ECU goals.

ECU outshot USM 13-10, while USM held a slim 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. Butler and Gratz each recorded three points on the afternoon with Butler leading the Pirates with three shots (all on goal). Gratz posted a pair of shots on goal, while Frey, Rachel Fuller, Oughton and Stephanie Seagraves each added one.

The Pirates will close out the 2012 season at home on Oct. 25 when they host Marshall at the ECU Soccer Stadium with a 7 p.m. (ET) start schedule. Thursday’s match has been designated as Senior Night and the Pirates will recognize nine seniors following the game.
