A holiday double header hits the Historic Dock Street Theatre with yuletide comedy A Christmas Story and children’s classic Madeline’s Christmas
Playing: A Christmas Story, November 30 – December 16 and Madeline’s Christmas, December 8, 9, 15, & 16 at the Historic Dock Street Theatre
Charleston, SC – Things are getting awfully festive on Church Street thanks to Charleston Stage’s double dose of holiday cheer with movie-turned-play A Christmas Story and classic children’s story, Madeline’s Christmas. This year the theatre company that delivers the biggest shows in town with full-scale productions, stunning scenery, dazzling costumes and brilliant lights is offering not one but two holiday must-see shows at the Historic Dock Street Theatre!
Starting November 30, laugh at the uproarious tomfoolery of little Ralphie Parker in a theater-adapted version of beloved 1983 film A Christmas Story. Julian Wiles directs this Charleston Stage production that includes additional scenes drawn from Jean Shepherd’s memoir, In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash, the original inspiration for the movie.
Charleston Stage Professional Resident Actor Josh Harris stars as Grown Up Ralphie and will act as the narrator for the production. Audiences may have recently seen Josh as Captain Amos Nimrod in Charleston Stage’s Nevermore and in last season’s production of Chicago as Amos Hart. Charleston Stage KidStage Performance Troupe members Joshua McCoy and Luke Shaw will trade off on the title role of Ralphie. Both are no strangers to the Dock Street Theatre stage. Joshua starred as Tiny Tim two season’s ago in Charleston Stage’s A Christmas Carol and Luke Shaw starred as Michael in Charleston Stage’s The Original Peter Pan and also as Tiny Tim last season in A Christmas Carol.
Complete with 1930s costumes courtesy of Barbara Young, Costumer In Residence, the show depicts all the iconic elements as seen in the movie including: the Leg Lamp, the Pink Bunny Suit, a certain episode with a Flagpole, the Santaland Slide, and more.
One viewing of this play, brought to you by South Carolina’s Largest Professional Theatre Company in Residence, and your children will finally understand the phrase, “You’ll shoot your eye out!”
Then on December 8th prepare to depart for France as a cast of 19, consisting of KidStage Performance Troupe Members and the six Charleston Stage Professional Resident Actors, bring the musical Madeline’s Christmas to life. Based on the treasured children’s book, Madeline’s Christmas, this holiday heart-warmer follows the young orphans in Miss Clavel’s care as they tackle Christmas adventures. The set is stylized after the iconic illustrations by Ludwig Bemelmans and crafted by Properties and Scenic Designers J. Kenneth Barnett III and Paul Hartmann.
“There are exact replicas of 15 dresses, aprons, coats, hats, white tights, black shoes (just like the iconic images) that all 15 actresses will wear,” says Costumer In Residence Barbara Young. Book your flight (ahem ticket) now for Paris and prepare for one exceptional Joyeux Noël and Bonne Année!
