Gordon Goes Off in New Orleans

THE RESULT
Ben Gordon scored a game-high 34 points to lead a 58-point performance from the Bobcats bench in a 107-99 loss on November 9 in New Orleans.

TURNING POINT
After cutting the Hornets lead to 50-42 late in the second quarter, Byron Mullens and Anthony Davis got tied up, leading to a flagrant foul one for Mullens and a technical foul on Davis. The confrontation seemed to spark Davis, as he scored 17 of the Hornets next 20 points to push the lead to 70-58 midway through the third quarter. Charlotte made numerous pushes the rest of the game but couldn’t get any closer than five points on the way to the loss.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Both benches impressed in this one, led by Ben Gordon’s game-high 34 points. Charlotte outscored New Orleans’ bench 58-56 behind Gordon and Ramon Sessions (13 points). The Hornets were led by 25 points off the bench from Ryan Anderson… The Cats and Hornets were close in nearly every stat line in the box score with the exception of assists, where New Orleans had 29 dimes on 43 baskets compared to the Bobcats 17 on 40 field goals.

BOBCATS PLAYER OF THE GAME
Ben Gordon was outstanding for the Cats off the bench, finishing with a game-high 34 points on 14-of-21 shooting in 35 minutes. He knocked down three 3-pointers and added six rebounds and four assists.

BOBCATS TOP RESERVE
Aside from Gordon, Ramon Sessions gave Charlotte a big lift off the bench with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting to go with four assists.

HORNETS PLAYER OF THE GAME
Rookie Anthony Davis gets the nod in this one with 23 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots. His stretch of play at the end of the second and into the third quarter sparked the win for New Orleans.

INSIDE THE LOCKER ROOM
“They played great defense and the numbers late in the game say that. So we found our offense and a way to play with some schemes that we found tonight. Also, we’re on the road and it was a slugfest; a tight game all the way. I think there are little things that we are finding in these tough defeats. I told them be ready to play Dallas (Mavericks). Bismack (Biyombo) had 14 boards and his development is coming. You can see little bits and pieces and we’re heading in the right direction.”
- Bobcats Head Coach Mike Dunlap on the bench play

“I just tried to be aggressive while I was out there. My teammates did a good job of finding me on various plays. The bigs did a solid job of setting various screens allowing me to get some space and I was able to score some points.”
- Bobcats Guard Ben Gordon on his game

GAME NOTES
The Bobcats started what might have been the youngest starting five in the NBA this season with Kemba Walker, Jeff Taylor, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Byron Mullens and Bismack Biyombo tipping things off. The average age of the Cats starters was 21.5 years… Biyombo got the start for Charlotte with Brendan Haywood having to miss the game due to a family emergency and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to go with six points and three blocks… Kemba Walker continues to protect the ball well. He finished with a team-high six assists while turning it over twice. He added 11 points and four assists, including a two-handed dunk on a breakaway in the first quarter… Jeff Taylor scored his first NBA basket on a 3-pointer in the first quarter and finished with seven points in 14 minutes… Rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had a solid game against his former teammate, Anthony Davis, scoring 12 points, grabbing six rebounds, blocking three shots and swiping two steals.
