Cougars Close Out Fall With Win at Atlantic Coast Tournament

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The No. 2-ranked College of Charleston sailing team closed out its fall season on a high note with a six-point victory at the Atlantic Coast Tournament hosted over the weekend by St. Mary’s College of Maryland in St. Mary’s, Md.

The Cougars totaled 90 points with 11 races sailed across the two divisions at the 14-team regatta held on the St. Mary’s River. They edged Connecticut College who placed second with 96 points. Boston University was third (144), Bowdoin College fourth (151) and Salve Regina University fifth (151) to round out the top 5 finishers.

Freshman Jake Reynolds (San Diego, Calif.) skippered A-Division to a first-place finish with sophomore crew Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.), while sophomore Nick Johnstone (Newport, R.I.) skippered B-Division to a third-place finish with freshman crew Septima Adams (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.).

Over at the Atlantic Coast Women’s Championship hosted by Connecticut College in New London, Conn., the No. 7-ranked CofC women placed 10th among the 18-team field.

Sophomore skipper Clerc Cooper (New Orleans, La.) and junior crew Elizabeth Chambers (Mooresville, N.C.) finished seventh in A-Division with 69 points, while junior skipper Carly Shevitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and senior crew Sarah Somes (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) placed 15th in B-Division with 93 points.

The Cougars will return to action after the New Year at the Rose Bowl regatta hosted by the University of Southern California on Jan. 5-6, 2013, in Los Angeles, Calif.
