Britnty Edwards leads ECU with a double-double in the set back
GREENVILLE, N.C. Nov. 17, 2012 – Britny Edwards recorded a double-double, but the Pirates’ second half rally was cut short as East Carolina dropped a, 72-62, decision to College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon at Minges Coliseum.
Britny Edwards led East Carolina (2-1) with a team-high 15 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. She added a game-high three blocks to go along with two assists. Whitny Edwards poured in 12 points with nine rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double and also collected a pair of assists. Freshman Colleen Marshall came off the bench and chipped in eight points, two boards, a pair of assists and two steals, while senior Celeste Stewart led the squad with four assists and contributed five points, two rebounds and a pair of steals.
College of Charleston (2-1) got on the board first with a layup off the hands of Latisha Harris to start the game. With the Cougars up 4-0, Britny Edwards cut the lead in half with a layup of her own for the Pirates’ first basket of the day. Despite the Pirates efforts, the Cougars held a slight edge throughout the first half. ECU’s determination never wavered as it did not allow College of Charleston to take a double-digit advantage in the first half of action.
The first half came to a close with the Pirates trailing 35-28. East Carolina was limited to 27-percent shooting in the frame and was only able to convert one three-point field goal. Britny Edwards led all scorers at the half with 11 points, while Christy Hewatt was the leader for College of Charleston with 10.
Although the Cougars made the first bucket of the second half, the Pirates were quick to counter as Whitny Edwards sunk back-to-back baskets to pull ECU within five (32-37). Tatiana Chapple led the Pirates’ offensive attack as she hit a jumper to cut the Cougars’ lead to one (38-39) at the 16:21 mark of the second half. Marshall followed suit and gave the Pirates their first lead of the game on a jumper at 14:55 to put ECU up 40-39. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Cougars answered with a trey of their own from Alyssa Frye to regain the lead, 42-40.
The Pirates battled, but were unable to reclaim the lead. The hosts cut the Cougars’ lead to one (55-54) at the 6:31 mark, but that was as close as the Pirates would come. As the clock expired, ECU tried to get the ball back as the Pirates fouled the Cougars multiple times which led to late scoring off of free throws to put College of Charleston up by as many as 10 at the conclusion of the game. When the final buzzer rang, the Cougars were on top 72-62.
As a team East Carolina shot 34.3-percent from the field, 75-percent from the free throw line and was limited to just 11.1-percent from three-point range. College of Charleston finished the contest with 41-percent shooting. The Cougars shot 57.1-percent from beyond the arc and connected on 56-percent of their free throws.
The Cougars were led by Latisha Harris who finished the contest with a double-double after pouring in 21 points and 15 rebounds. Frye also contributed 21 points, while adding four assists, three boards, and two steals.
East Carolina looks to get back on the winning track when it hosts Converse College on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ECUPirates.com. Live stats and video will also be available.
