WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW men’s basketball Head Coach Buzz Peterson has announced the signings of Ohio shooting guard Tyler Ptacek and North Carolina power forward Chuck Ogbodo to National Letters of Intent to play next season for the Seahawks.
Ptacek (pronounced TAH-check) and Ogbodo (pronounced Ogg-BOW-Doe) complete the 2013-14 recruiting class for Peterson and his staff, giving the Seahawks help on the perimeter and inside.
Ptacek is a senior at Padua Franciscan High School in Parma, Ohio, while Ogbodo is completing his final year at High Point Christian Academy in High Point, N.C.
“We needed another guard and since we’re losing two post players, we felt like we needed one more inside player,” said Peterson. “We’re excited about them joining the Seahawk family and their futures here.”
A 6-2, 165-pound sharpshooter, Ptacek has averaged nearly 16 points over the last three seasons, including 21.9 ppg one year ago for the Bruins. He earned Honorable Mention honors on the Division II All-Ohio Team. Ptacek made 40 percent of his field goal attempts and 83 percent at the free throw line.
“Tyler is known as a shooter, but he’s a tough, hard-nosed kid,” said Peterson. “He’s a very intelligent player who doesn’t mind sticking his nose in there to make a play. At the same time, teams have to respect his outside shooting.”
Ptacek, who has scored 32 points in the first game of his sophomore and junior seasons, enters his senior year with 998 career points
The 6-10, 240-pouond Ogbodo, meanwhile, has only been playing basketball three years after moving to the United States from Nigeria. He plays for former UNCW standout Brandon Clifford at HPCA.
“Chuck’s only been playing for a short time, so he has a bright future ahead of him. He runs the floor very well and is a very good rim protector.”
The Seahawks lose just two seniors off this year’s club – forward Keith Rendleman and center Matt Wilson.
