RALEIGH – The N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh has seen its visitation numbers rise steadily this fall. There was a 76 percent increase in visitation in October 2012 compared to last October. Such increases are part of a year-long trend at the Division of State History Museums and State Historic Sites this fall.
The exhibit Real to Reel: The Making of ”Gone with the Wind” is tremendously popular, and timely political programs, concerts, and other programs also have proven inviting to the public. The museum offers a wide variety of programs, including major events, such as the upcoming 12th Annual African American Cultural Celebration on Jan. 26. Exhibits such as Al Norte al Norte: Latino Life in North Carolina, and the newly opened exhibit about North Carolina governors, illustrate the many aspects of life in North Carolina that the museum presents. There also has been an increase in the number of group tours.
The museum publicizes its programs with news releases and maintains an online presence through its website, Facebook and Twitter. Advertising is purchased for some special programs. Additionally, the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau features the museum on its website. This public outreach informs citizens of the educational and recreational offerings at the museum.
Teachers and students find the history museum a great resource, especially the exhibit The Story of North Carolina, covering 14,000 years of the state’s history. Another significant aspect of the Tar Heel state’s past is being presented in the exhibit North Carolina and the Civil War: The Raging Storm, 1863. Here students and visitors can see 23 handguns and two North Carolina battle flags that were recovered from the field of war.
Since opening as the Hall of History in 1902, and the new building opening on Bicentennial Plaza in 1994, the Museum of History has presented exhibits and programs about the people and events that have shaped North Carolina. Major supporters have helped make this possible, including the Josephus Daniels Charitable Fund of the Triangle Community Foundation, State Employees Credit Union Foundation, GlaxoSmithKline, Bank of America, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, Sen. And Mrs. James T. Broyhill, Reynolds American Foundation and Coca-Cola Foundation.
North Carolina is known far and wide for its authentic cultural experiences and historic sites and museums are great destinations for those important cultural and heritage travelers, who stay longer and spend more money in local economies.
“Visitors are discovering that our state supported historic sites and museums offer great family fun,” says Cultural Resources Secretary Linda Carlisle, who noted that the Division of State History Museums overall saw a 37 percent increase during October over the previous October.
