SURF CITY, TOPSAIL ISLAND - Tai Chi makes its addition to the Surf City Parks & Recreation group exercise schedule in January along with a 6 am Boot Camp, another new winter highlight. Both classes begin Tuesday, January 8 at the Surf City Community Center. Instructor David Key will hold a special Tai Chi orientation at the Community Center on Saturday, January 5 at 10:30 am. There is no charge for this special event. Key has been a student of Yang style short form Tai Chi for over 17 years. He has also studied Medical Qigong. With his extensive teaching experience, David provides a relaxed learning environment and multiple approaches to mastering the basics.

Tai Chi is a moving meditation with many health benefits. The deep breathing, gentle twisting motions and posture flows can lower blood pressure, relieve stress, strengthen the immune system, improve balance and develop mindfulness. Classes will run from 6-7 pm and will initially continue through February 5. The cost is just $5 per class.

At Boot Camp, Instructor Linda Carlsen brings a multifaceted approach to early morning group exercise. “Boot Camp means everything…… interval training, weightlifting, circuit training — all things exercise included,” she explains. This class is designed for all fitness levels. The cost for the eight week program is $80 for members equaling only $5 per class for each 45 minute session. The charge is $95 for non-members. Since the Community Center will be open to host this class, other early-morning exercisers are also welcome to use the facility starting at 6 am, Tuesday and Thursday mornings, also starting January 8.

The New Year also brings several other changes to the group exercise schedule: Carlsen’s Gentle Yoga class moves to 8:30 am on Tuesdays and she is also starting up Strength & Conditioning at 8:30 am on Thursdays replacing Pilates. Both classes are $5. Zumba moves from Monday to Wednesday night, 7:15 pm, taught by Haydee Adams. Her Tuesday night Zumba class remains at 6:45 pm. The charge for either is $5. Finally, Introduction to Belly Dance resumes on Thursday, January 10 as instructed by LuAnn Hooper at 6 pm.
