CHARLESTON, SC Jan. 20, 2013 - Trailing by 11 points with 10 minutes to go the College of Charleston women’s basketball team went on a 12-3 run to cut the deficit to two, but could not get any closer as they fell 63-56 against Elon on Sunday.
The Cougars scored the first four points of the game on jumpers by Fischer and Frye, but Elon (10-7, 7-1) scored the next five to take a 5-4 lead. Elon would lead for virtually the entire first half as they went up by as many as 16 and led 38-27 at halftime.
The Cougars got off to a quick start in the second half as they went on a 7-0 run that forced Elon to call a timeout with the score 38-34 with 18:18 left in the game. Over the next eight minutes the Phoenix went on a 12-5 run to take a 50-39 lead with 10:11 to play.
On the next Cougar possession senior Cathryn Hardy grabbed one of her six offensive rebounds and got the ball to point guard Jillian Brown, who sent it back to Hardy, who knocked down a three-pointer. That ignited a 12-3 run for the Cougars to get them within two at 53-51 with six minutes to play.
Ali Ford and Kelsey Evans, who scored a combined 32 points for Elon scored back-to-back baskets to put the Phoenix up seven at 58-51 with 4:09 remaining.
CofC only converted one field goal in the last four minutes as Elon went on to take the victory over the Cougars.
The Cougars are the only team that has beaten Elon in Southern Conference play as the Cougars won at Elon, 57-55 on Dec. 1.
