Pine Knoll Shores, NC – The North Carolina Aquarium Society recently honored two employees at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores for outstanding performance.
Suzanne Lewis, the Exhibits Department media technician, was recognized with the 2012 Award of Excellence. Lonnie Burke, a Security/Greeter with Visitor Services, was chosen for the 2012 Customer Service Award. The two were selected from nominations by their fellow employees.
In addition to operating AV equipment used in daily operations, Lewis produces videos for exhibits and programs, an informational series called At the Aquarium and promotional clips and commercials. Her contributions to the holiday event, Santa by the Sea, and her work on two television commercials for the summer penguin exhibit were singled out as examples of her commitment.
“She produces professional quality videos with limited resources and time,” Aquarium Director Allen Monroe quoted from the nomination, going on to mention filming commercials in hot and wet conditions with challenging subjects that included dogs, kids and penguins.
Burke interacts with thousands of visitors a day during the busy season, keeping watch over safety and security. His nomination cited his willingness to do much more, including driving the Aquarium’s float in holiday parades and offering CPR certification instruction to the staff.
“He jumps in and helps wherever he is needed,” Monroe quoted from the nomination. “He helps visitors when their cars won’t start or if they have a flat tire. He retrieves shoes that have fallen into the marsh. He does all these things in a courteous and efficient manner.”
The membership-based North Carolina Aquarium Society supports programs and activities at the three North Carolina Aquariums – at Pine Knoll Shores, at Fort Fisher and on Roanoke Island. The Society annually sponsors the employee awards.
