ECU Men’s Tennis Defeats Appalachian State

Pirates post 5-2 victory for fourth straight win

GREENVILLE, NC Feb. 16, 2013 – The East Carolina men’s tennis team defeated Appalachian State, 5-2, at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center Saturday afternoon to extend its winning streak to four matches. The Pirates (7-1) won the doubles point and singles matches at the first four flights.

Senior John Schmitt and sophomore Damien Brenard defeated the Mountaineer duo of Steve Karendal and Andrew McKinnon at No. 2 doubles, 8-2 before the sophomore tandem of Patriek Wolterbeek and Nicolas Soriano disposed of Steve Lake and Zachary Bost at No. 3, 8-3.

In singles play, Joran Vliegen easily handled Sebastien King 6-1, 6-2 to remain undefeated at the No. 1 position this season. Schmitt and Bernard each won in straight sets at positions 3 and 4, respectively and Soriano outlasted Karendal at No. 2 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

ASU won flight No. 5 and 6 as McKinnon defeated Wolterbeek in straight sets, while Matt Saltgaver took down ECU freshman Blake Gregory 7-5, 6-3.

The Pirates return to action Friday, Feb. 22 at Georgia Southern before taking on Conference USA rival UCF on Saturday. Both matches will be played in Statesboro, Ga.
