Carolina Hurricanes Recall Ryan Murphy from Kitchener Rangers

RALEIGH, NC Feb. 21, 2013 – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled defenseman Ryan Murphy from the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) on an emergency basis. The team also placed center Tim Brent on injured reserve, retroactive to Feb. 14.

Murphy, 19, has skated in 46 OHL games for Kitchener this season, ranking first among Rangers defensemen in goals (8) and points (39), and tied for first in assists (31). The Aurora, Ont., native is in his fourth season of junior hockey for Kitchener and represented Canada at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Russia earlier this season. Murphy (5’11”, 176 lbs.) attended the Hurricanes’ training camp from Jan. 13-18, prior to being returned to Kitchener. Carolina’s first-round selection, 12th overall, in the 2011 NHL Draft, he has scored 51 goals and earned 160 assists (211 points) in 220 career OHL regular-season games with Kitchener. Murphy has yet to make his NHL debut.
