The Cougars will be looking to bounce back from a tough 0-3 weekend at the Auburn Tournament when they head to JU on Wednesday to face the Jacksonville Dolphins at 4 p.m.
College of Charleston was swept on the weekend for the first time since since March 18-20, 2011 as it fell to Indiana State, Auburn and Middle Tennessee State. The Cougars faced a rash of outstanding pitching, including ISU’s Sean Manaea, the No. 2 overall prospect in college baseball according to Baseball America.
The Cougars battled all weekend as they forced a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth inning against the Sycamores before an error in the bottom of the frame allowed the game-winning two runs to score. Against MTSU, the Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull within one, but could not even the score and fell 4-3.
Wednesday’s broadcast will be audio only and available for free on the Charleston Sports Network at CofCSports.com. Will Bryan and Dennis Trapani will provide the play-by-play and color commentary. Free live stats will be available on Jacksonville’s website at JUDolphins.com.
Series vs. Jacksonville
College of Charleston is 8-3 against the Dolphins in the all-time series. The Cougars had two big wins against Jacksonville last season, winning 7-0 on the road and 16-3 at home. The Cougars took a perfect game into the ninth inning before allowing an infield hit to break it up in the contest down in Florida. The Cougars tied a school record with 12 runs in the first inning in the home win over the Dolphins.
Scouting The Dolphins
Jacksonville is 3-4 on the season with wins over Richmond and Radford. The Dolphins also battled with No. 9 Florida State before losing, 9-7.
Picked to finish ninth in the Atlantic Sun preseason poll, Jacksonville is hitting .237 as a team this season and have cobbled a team ERA of 4.64. Opponents are hitting .251 off of the JU pitching staff.
Braddock Rowe leads all players with a .350 batting average with six RBI, while Michael Babb has a .333 average with a homer, double and four RBI.
New Year, Same ERA
College of Charleston surprised many with its dominating pitching staff which led the SoCon in multiple categories in 2012. With five pitchers of that staff departed, including four to the minor leagues, some expected 2013 to be a rebuilding year for CofC pitching. However, through the first two weeks of the season the Cougars lead the conference with a staff ERA of 2.51. They are tied first in HR allowed (1) and runners picked off (4), and are third in strikeouts (57).
Pegler Dealing But Decisionless
Preseason SoCon Pitcher of the Year Matt Pegler has lived up to the hype in his first two starts. He left the season opener in line for the win, but Xavier tied the game in the late innings. He was also going toe-to-toe in 1-0 game against Preseason All-American Sean Manaea (2/22) before the Cougars later tied it and fell in the 8th inning. Despite having a 0-0 record, Pegler ranks second in the SoCon with an ERA of 0.77. He also has two pick-offs which leads the SoCon.
Freie-ing the Opposition
With the departure of three veteran bullpen arms in David Peterson, Kyle Owings and Nick Osterman, the Cougars have looked to senior Drew Freie to be a veteran presence among the relievers. Freie has answered in a big way, earning his first career win over CSU on Feb. 19. He has punched out a team-high 11 batters in just nine innings pitched which ranks seventh in the SoCon.
Hanzlik Thrown To The Fire
Many College of Charleston fans had not heard of junior transfer RHP Michael Hanzlik when he entered the game on Opening Night against Xavier. Hanzlik pitched an inning and a third of no-hit ball and earned his first career win after the Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Hanzlik has now made four appearances with a 1-1 record and an ERA of 1.59. In every one of his appearances, the game has either been tied or the Cougars have trailed by one run.
These Boots Are Made For Walking
College of Charleston has shown great patience at the plate so far this year, drawing 35 walks and posting a team on-base percentage of .328. The Cougars rank second in the SoCon in walks, while Brandon Glazer (5) and Brandon Murray (5) each rank fourth in the league individually.
Career Day vs. CSU
The Cougars had a number of new career highs in their 13-5 win over Charleston Southern. Senior Jimmy Revan made his first career start on the mound, while Drew Freie earned his first career win in relief. Sophomore Gunnar Heidt tallied a career-high four RBI with a home run and a triple and freshman Carl Wise knocked his first career hit, a solo home run to center field.
Rain, Rain Go Away
In 2013, four games have already been moved or delayed because of rain. The CofC-CSU game of 2/19 was moved to Patriots Point because of rain at CSU, and the JU game of 2/26 was moved back a day to avoid rain.
