NC State head coach Elliott Avent takes on the Aggies (3-4) for the first time since he helmed that squad from 1989-1996. Under Avent, New Mexico State went 225-213 and boasted a 40-19 record in the 1990 season.

The Wolfpack (5-1) will be in good shape if its bats are even half as hot as they were over the weekend. State went 5-0 last week, and scored 43 runs in a doubleheader against Wagner on Sunday. The Pack went 34-for-81 at the plate with 12 doubles, and nine home runs, including three grand slams. Wolfpack batters drew 16 walks and struck out just nine times on their way to scoring in 14 of 16 offensive innings. Brett Williams went 7-for-9 with three doubles, three home runs, and 10 RBIs in the doubleheader.

Last Saturday against La Salle, Carlos Rodon and Karl Keglovits combined for the first Pack no-hitter since 2005. Rodon struck out a career-high 14 while walking one through seven innings, and Keglovits pitched a perfect eighth and ninth in his first collegiate appearance.

Rodon earned Louisville Slugger’s National Pitcher of the Week and ACC Pitcher of the Week honors for his effort. Since giving up a fourth-inning home run to Appalachian State’s Preston Troutman on February 15, Rodon has faced 31 batters without allowing a hit, striking out 16. He retired 28 of the 31 men he faced in that span, walking two. The other reached on an error.

Trea Turner continues to close in on the NC State career stolen base record. After a 4-for-4 start to 2013, Turner needs 12 more to surpass Tom Sergio’s school record 73 stolen bases from 1994-97. The sophomore has reached base 20 times this season, and scored on 13 of those occasions. All seven times that Turner has reached and failed to score have come with two outs. Turner stands 10-for-10 on scoring when reaching base with less than two outs.
