Dramatic Footage puts lie to Tokyo claims –
Flash grenade explodes over oil tanker in Antarctic waters
Feb. 26, 2013 – Fremantle, Australia:
Sea Shepherd Australia has released dramatic footage showing its ship, Bob Barker, squeezed and buffeted between the giant, Japanese whale factory ship, Nisshin Maru, and the oil tanker, Sun Laurel. As water cannons rained down on the Bob Barker and it was smashed between the much bigger ships, a Japanese coast guard concussion grenade explodes over the Bob Barker and the oil tanker.
Co-Campaign Leader Bob Brown stated, “I am full of pride at the courage of the unarmed Sea Shepherd crew who have prevented this illegal refueling operation in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary. This footage puts the lie to the claims from Tokyo that Sea Shepherd has rammed the factory ship. Clearly the reverse is true. Sea Shepherd has provided the footage to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and to Australian Environment Minister, Tony Burke, calling again for intervention by Australia to uphold Australian and international law in the whale sanctuary.”
Director of Sea Shepherd Australia and Co-Campaign Leader, Jeff Hansen, stated, “It is very difficult to watch friends of mine on board the Bob Barker being thrown around like a rag doll by this massive, illegal, bully factory ship. However in the absence of Australian authorities upholding Australian law, I can think of no place they would rather be than on the frontline defense of our magnificent whales.”

This footage shows the Bob Barker vessel being rammed by the Nisshin Maru and then sandwiched between the Nisshin Maru and the Fuel Tanker, Sun laurel. It also shows a flash bang grenade going off right next to the Fuel tanker in a pristine Antarctic environment, in the Australian Antarctic territory, in an established whale sanctuary. The flash bang grenades were thrown by armed Japanese Coast Guards that are onboard the fuel tanker. The Bob Barker was able to hold its ground even though it was being pushed all over the place like a rag doll in turbulent water, like a washing machine (created by the mass of the Nisshin Maru). Sea Shepherd’s Bob Barker was able to prevent the illegal fueling attempt by the Nisshin Maru, factory whaling ship.
