FAIRFAX, Virginia March 2, 2013 – UNCW held off a stiff challenge from William & Mary to claim its 12th consecutive Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Swimming and Diving championship on Saturday at the McKay Natatorium.

The Seahawk women placed fourth as Towson topped defending champion James Madison for the title.

“It was a tremendous meet,” said UNCW Head Coach Dave Allen. “We were pushed all the way by William & Mary and George Mason. They were great all meet. Our kids knew it would be tough and they did a great job of attacking each event.”

For Allen, he was honored as the Coach-of-the-Year for the 15th time overall, fifth straight for the men and ninth overall on the men’s side.

UNCW totaled four event titles in the session with Carly Tanner winning her third title with a time of 49.91 seconds in the women’s 100 Freestyle.

In the women’s 200 Breaststroke, Jensen Engon placed fifth and set a school record with a time of 2:15.80.

“Carly was tremendous this weekend,” said Allen. “She really had a great meet and I think she has a solid chance at swimming in the NCAA Championships.”

Valterri Halonen added the men’s 200 Backstroke title to his collection when he set a UNCW and meet record with a time of 1:44.49.

In the men’s 100 Free, Joe Gallene also set meet and school records with a winning time of 43.85. Nick Lowe added a third-place finish in the event to earn All-CAA honors.

UNCW gained key points with a pair of All-CAA finishes in the 200 Breaststroke. Ray McGorry, who set a school record with a time of 2:01.32, and Michael Baric finished second and third, respectively.

With a 29-point lead going into the final event, UNCW’s 400 Free Relay closed out the meet in resounding fashion. The relay tandem of Gallene, Gabe Thran, Lowe and C.J. Fiala won the event with a meet and school record time of 2:57.01.
