CAA Honors Seahawk Trio for Tennis Success

WILMINGTON, NC March 13, 2013 – Senior Kosta Blank, sophomore Alyssa Ritchie and freshman Christine Kharkevich have collected weekly tennis honors from the Colonial Athletic Association after enjoying recent success for the UNCW men’s and women’s teams.

Blank, from Winnipeg, Canada, was tabbed the CAA’s Men’s Singles Player-of-the-Week, while Ritchie racked up two-way honors, earning Women’s Singles Co-Player-of the-Week and Doubles Team-of-the-Week accolades with Kharkevich.

Blank was selected as the loop’s top singles player after posting a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Dominique Johnson of 20th-ranked Clemson at No. 4 singles. He improved his singles record to 6-3 on the season with a three-match winning streak.

 

Ritchie, meanwhile, shared the league’s singles honors with James Madison’s Cara Wirth after both went undefeated last week. Ritchie was 4-0 in three different spots in the Seahawks’ lineup. She beat Evansville’s Mina Milovic, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3, blanked Butler’s Sienna Reuter, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, topped N.C. State’s Elisha Hande, 6-0, 7-6 (2) at No. 5 and cruised past East Tennessee’s Sofia Espana, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5. The Franklin, Ohio, netter has won four straight matches in climbing to 8-3 this spring.

 

Ritchie and Kharkevich were named the CAA’s top doubles unit after going 4-0 at the No. 3 spot. The tandem trimmed Evansville’s Gaby Fifer and Emily Richardson, 8-5, shut out Butler’s Kristen Haeberlein and Clare Cornelius, 8-0, edged N.C. State’s Chloe Smith and Sophie Nelson, 8-5, and breezed past ETSU’s Sofia Espana and Salma Dahbi, 8-2. The duo sports a team-best 8-3 record at No. 3 doubles this season.
