The Cougars started off well in doubles when the tandem of senior Irene Viana (Paris, France) and freshman Katherine Schofield (Franklin, Tenn.) knocked off Heidi Danielsson and Julia Sauer of UMBC 8-2 on Court 1.

The duo of junior Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.) and sophomore Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) also managed a victory via an 8-5 score over Josefin Stange-Jonsson and Shannon Cleary of the Retrievers on Court 2 to clinch the doubles point for the College.

CofC carried the momentum from the doubles win over to singles when senior Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) blanked Isabel Aldunate of UMBC 6-0, 6-0 on Court 1.

The Cougars continued right down the order when Kambourelis topped Danielsson 6-2, 6-1 on Court 2 to put CofC up 3-0.

Then, for the second match in a row, Viana clinched the overall win for the Cougars when she defeated Cleary 6-4, 6-0 on Court 6.

“I saw continued improvement in our enthusiasm today,” CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “I like the way our girls are competing and those last two wins were exactly what we needed going into conference play against two very good teams in Davidson and Appalachian State this weekend. Hopefully we can carry this momentum right into those matches.”

CofC will travel up to North Carolina for two Southern Conference matches this weekend starting with Davidson on Saturday, March 23 at 10 a.m. (ET) on the Covington Tennis Courts in Davidson, N.C.
