UNC Wilmington Holds Off CofC Comeback, Wins 7-2

WILMINGTON, NC April 2, 2013 – UNC Wilmington held off a late CofC comeback with three runs in the seventh inning to go on to a 7-2 non-conference victory on Tuesday night.


The Seahawks (21-8) tallied nine hits and drew eight walks as they halted College of Charleston’s (16-12) recent three-game win streak.

Evan Phillips (2-0) picked up the win for UNCW, going 6.0 innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five. Ryan West (2-1) suffered his first loss on his first season start, going 4.1 innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits.


Drew Farber led the Wilmington offense with two RBI on two hits, scoring two runs. Hunter Ridge hit a two-RBI double in the eighth inning to put help put the game away.


Ben Boykin went 2-for-3 for the Cougars, driving in one. Gunnar Heidt also tallied an RBI while Alex Pastorius scored a run. The Cougars stranded 11 runners on base in the game, including six in scoring position.


UNC Wilmington broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Luke Dunlap was hit by a pitch and Corey Dick walked. Another walk from Tyler Molinaro loaded the bases and Farber drove in two runs with a single up the middle to give UNCW a 2-0 lead.


College of Charleston threatened in the top of the sixth with a one-out double from Brandon Murray and single from Boykin. However, College of Charleston couldn’t find another hit and eventually left the bases loaded.


The Seahawks scored again in the bottom of the sixth inning with hits from Farber, Connelly and an RBI double from Dillon Bass to make the score 3-0. After a groundout and a walk, Dunlap dropped in an infield single to score another run and push the Seahawks’ lead to four.


Freshmen Morgan Phillips and Alex Pastorius led off the seventh inning with singles to left field. Gunnar Heidt singled home a run for his team-leading 27th RBI of the year. Boykin then hit a two-out single off the leg of pitcher Justin Livengood that scored Pastorius from second base to cut it to a 4-2 game and give the Cougars momentum.


UNCW jumped right back on the Cougar bullpen in the bottom of the seventh inning with three runs on four walks and two hits, extending the lead to 7-2 and securing the victory.


College of Charleston will return home this week for a SoCon series against UNC Greensboro.
