Charleston RiverDogs Bullpen Run Over by Drive in 4-2 Loss

Vargas’ Quality Start Goes To Waste

GREENVILLE, SC April 5, 2013 – A four-run sixth-inning propelled the Greenville Drive (1-0) to a season opening 4-2 victory over the Charleston RiverDogs (0-1) Friday night at Fluor Field at the West End in Greenville, SC.

RiverDogs starter Cesar Vargas went five strong innings, allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out six and only walking one batter. Vargas was relieved by RHP Brett Gerritse (0-1), who was tagged for four runs, all earned on three hits while striking out one and walking two.

Offensively, Charleston was led by Cito Culver, Yeicok Calderon and Saxon Butler. Culver was 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot for the RiverDogs, while Calderon reached base twice on a walk and an error and scored both of the RiverDogs runs. Butler finished 1-for-3, but he also reached base on a walk in the fourth.

Greenville starter RHP Justin Haley lasted only three and two-thirds of an inning allowing one unearned on two hits while striking out six and walking four. Greenville played fantastic defense behind Haley and the bullpen was stellar.

Jason Garcia (1-0) relieved Haley in the fourth and threw five and a third innings allowing only one unearned run. He struck-out six and walked two.

Greenville put all of their runs on the board in the sixth. After reliever Brett Gerritse retired the first batter he faced, he then surrendered back-to-back walks to Cody Koback and Boss Moanaroa. With runners at first and second, LF Aneury Tavarez hit an RBI double plating Koback. DH David Chester would then come to the plate and come through with a two-run single giving Greenville a lead that they would not relinquish.

Charleston will look to get in the win column Saturday in a doubleheader against Greenville. Game one tomorrow is a make-up of Thursday’s rain-out and is scheduled to start at 4:30pm with game two starting no earlier than 7pm. Both games of the doubleheader will be seven-innings. Starting game one for the RiverDogs will be RHP Raphael DePaula (NR) and he will be opposed by fellow RHP Pat Light (NR) for the Drive. Game two starters are RHP Derek Varnadore (NR) for the RiverDogs and RHP Austin Maddox (NR) for Greenville.
