Zebulon, NC April 24, 2013 – Kevin Keyes belted a soaring blast that shattered a bulb on the left field light tower to score the only runs in a 2-0 Potomac win over the Carolina Mudcats on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium. The homer was estimated to travel 440 feet.

Potomac’s hurlers held the Mudcats (8-11) scoreless for the first time this season. Blake Schwartz (1-0) earned the win in his debut by tossing six unblemished innings. He scattered three hits and struck out five as the Nationals improved to 9-10.

With the offense failing to score, Shawn Morimando (1-2) suffered the loss for Carolina despite an impressive outing. The left-hander scattered three hits, including Keyes’ blast, and fanned three to two walks.

Carolina was unable to put together a rally until the ninth inning. The Mudcats got two on with no one out thanks to a walk by Jerrud Sabourin and a single from Jordan Smith. However, Nationals’ reliever Derek Self induced a pair of force outs before retiring Bryson Myles on a dribbler up the first base line to end the game.

The Mudcats look to claim the four-game series with the Potomac Nationals on Thursday night at 7:15 p.m. Thursday nights at Five County Stadium are “Thirsty Thursdays” presented by Natty Greene’s Brewing Company. Right-hander Will Roberts makes his fourth start against Potomac’s right-hander, Taylor Hill. Tickets can be purchased by calling (919) 269-2287, or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
