Fort Mill, SC April 26, 2013 – The Charlotte Knights ended their four-game series with the Norfolk Tides on Friday with a 11-4 loss at Knights Stadium. The loss was Charlotte’s third in the four-game series and 16th of the season.
RHP Jake Arrieta (1-0, 0.00) threw six shutout innings for the Tides en route to the win. Arrieta, who began the season with the Baltimore Orioles, allowed just three hits and struck-out eight Knights batters on the evening.
Third baseman Danny Valencia hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to lead the Tides offensively. Along with the home run, Valencia went 3-5 with two runs scored and four RBIs. The home run was allowed by LHP Leyson Septimo, who was making a Major League rehab appearance.
Septimo, who is currently on the Chicago White Sox disabled list, allowed three runs over just 0.1 innings pitched. The Dominican native is recovering from a left shoulder strain. Knights starter Andre Rienzo (1-2, 7.71) allowed six runs (five earned) over 5.1 innings and was charged with the loss.
Offensively for the Knights, Jim Gallagher led the way with a hit and two RBIs, while Steve Tolleson hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning off Norfolk reliever Mark Hendrickson. Josh Phegley also chipped in with two hits.
The Knights will host the Scranton-Wilkes/Barre RailRiders on Saturday for game one of a four-game series. RHP Simon Castro (0-3, 5.48) will make the start in the opener on Saturday for Charlotte while LHP Vidal Nuno (2-0, 1.54) will start for the RailRiders. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with first pitch scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
