Charleston falls 6-0 to Lakewood and suffer sixth straight road loss
LAKEWOOD, NJ May 2, 2013 – The Lakewood BlueClaws (9-17) jumped out again to an early 2-0 lead after one inning of play and handed the Charleston RiverDogs (13-12) their sixth-straight road loss 6-0 Thursday evening at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, New Jersey.
The Charleston bats were silent again in game two of their three game set in Lakewood. The RiverDogs had only six hits in the ballgame, half of which came in the final two innings. Catcher Peter O’Brien and designated hitter Reymond Nunez each went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of singles. The only other RiverDog to reach base twice was leadoff hitter Jake Cave who doubled in the seventh and walked in the first. Cave has now hit safely in seven of the eight games he has appeared in for Charleston.
RiverDogs starter Daniel Camarena (0-2) struggled on the mound. Camarena went four innings and gave up six runs, four earned on five hits and struckout three. Charleston’s bullpen was strong yet again Thursday night. Brett Gerritse and Phil Wetherell combined to go four shutout innings and allowed just three hits and struckout four.
Making his first start of the 2013 season, right hander Nicholas Hanson looked like a veteran on the mound for the BlueClaws. Hanson threw five shutout innings and allowed just two hits and struckout five. Lakewood’s bullpen did not disappoint, as Jordan Guth, Zack Cooper and Geoff Broussard combined to toss four shutout innings of four hit ball and struckout eight.
Offensively, the BlueClaws jumped on Charleston for two quick runs in the first, another three runs in the second inning and their sixth and final run in the fourth inning. No BlueClaw recorded multiple hits in the ballgame, but they were able to play small ball and use it to their advantage. Lakewood’s two runs in the first came across due to passed balls, in the second inning a run came across on an error and another run came across on a fielder’s choice.
The RiverDogs and BlueClaws close out their three-game set Friday evening in Lakewood, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm. Charleston sends RHP Rafael De Paula (1-2, 3.63 ERA) to the mound, as Lakewood counters with fellow RHP Josh Warner (1-2, 5.87 ERA).
