Norfolk, VA July 13, 2013 – Former White Sox star Freddy Garcia allowed two runs (one earned) over seven innings, Buck Britton homered, and the Norfolk Tides beat the Charlotte Knights 10-2 on Saturday in the middle game of their three-game series from Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA. The loss was Charlotte’s sixth straight and ninth in the month of July (13 games).
Garcia (5-2, 3.12) gave up six hits and two walks, while striking out five. Charlotte pushed across their first run of the night against Garcia in the third inning on a sacrifice fly RBI off the bat of Mike McDade. The Knights tacked on one more run along the way thanks to a Jordan Danks RBI double in the fifth inning.
The Norfolk offense burst out in a big way on Saturday – ripping 16 hits and scoring 10 runs. Zelous Wheeler led the charge at the plate for the Tides. Wheeler went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a triple, and five RBIs. Britton hit the game’s lone home run – a fourth-inning blast off Knights starter Tony Pena Jr. (2-8, 4.86).
Pena Jr. allowed eight runs on 12 hits over 3.1 innings. His ERA skyrocketed from 3.92 to 4.86. Reliever Leyson Septimo gave up two runs on three hits over 2.2 innings. Only reliever Deunte Heath kept the Tides at bay – no runs over two innings.
Danks played in his 357th career Knights game, which is now tied with Rusty Crockett for the second most in Knights franchise history. Only Joe Borchard (447) has played in more games as a Knight. Danks is also second all-time in at-bats and hits. Earlier this year, the Texas native became the all-time Knights leader in triples and walks.
The two teams will conclude their series on Sunday at 6:05 p.m. Sunday’s game also marks the final game before the All-Star Break, which runs from July 15-17.
