Beaufort NC – In partnership with the NC Maritime Museum, Fort Macon Sail and Power Squadron offers a series of three free seminars to the Friends of the Museum and boating public. Held in the museum at 315 Front Street on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 PM on October 1st, 8th, and 15th, the seminars use United States Power Squadrons® University curriculum materials and slide presentations, and they are taught by certified instructors. Come and ask questions about what you learned and meet other boaters: sail and power.

Navigation Chart Use Seminar, Beaufort, N.C., Oct 1st
A free seminar “How to Use a Navigational Chart” is being presented by the United States Power Squadrons® Crystal Coast affiliate, Fort Macon Sail and Power Squadron. This free seminar, hosted by the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, will be on Tuesday evening October 1 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM in the main auditorium at 315 Front Street, Beaufort. Doors open at 6:15 PM. All boaters and anyone interested in how to use navigational charts to improve your fun and safety afloat are invited to participate.

This two hour seminar is an informative, informal, hands-on presentation by a certified squadron instructor. Come learn and understand the US National Chart System and how to read and identify chart symbols both above and below the water. Learn to plot a clear path between you and your intended destination. See how to use a chart to indicate what is around you including water depth, obstacles and anchoring bottom types. You will develop the ability to recognize visible landmarks and navigation aids

You will also learn how to link chart information with your GPS / Chartplotter display. You will become familiar with latitude and longitude for better GPS operation and you will be better prepared when your GPS fails or chart plotter menus get too complicated. This seminar will help you prepare a Plan-B in those situations.

So if you ever wondered what a chart is all about or how to use it to get around our coastal inlets, sounds, rivers and creeks come and enjoy a fun evening walk-thru the NOAA Chart No. 1 and learn all about the chart symbols, how to download free charts from the internet and how they can help you. Coastal Navigation Seminar, Beaufort, N.C., Oct 8th
The next free seminar “How to Perform Basic Coastal Navigation” is being presented by the United States Power Squadrons® Crystal Coast affiliate, Fort Macon Sail and Power Squadron. This free seminar, hosted by the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, will be on Tuesday evening October 8 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM in the main auditorium at 315 Front Street, Beaufort. Doors open at 6:15 PM. All boaters and anyone interested in how to perform basic coastal navigation in sight of land to improve your fun and safety afloat are invited to participate.

This two hour seminar is an informative, informal, hands-on presentation by a certified squadron instructor. Come learn and understand practical techniques to plan and navigate on our local waters. See how to check your underway progress on the water using a chart and simple techniques. Learn to use your seaman’s eye together with navigation tools to make your way safely to favorite destinations. Learn to quickly point out your position on a chart should the situation change. We will show you how to develop situational awareness skills and safe water navigation skills.

Of particular interest to many mariners is how to understand the relationship among time enroute, boat speed and distance to-go. We’ll show you a simple to use approach. This seminar will help you integrate you GPS / Chartplotter navigation with traditional methods and will help you develop backup techniques when the electronics fail.

Marine GPS and Chartplotter, Beaufort, N.C., Oct 15th
A third free seminar “How to Use a Marine GPS and Chartplotter” is being presented by the United States Power Squadrons® Crystal Coast affiliate, Fort Macon Sail and Power Squadron. This free seminar, hosted by the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, will be on Tuesday evening October 15 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM in the main auditorium at 315 Front Street, Beaufort. Doors open at 6:15 PM. All boaters and anyone interested in how use a marine GPS or GPS / Chartplotter to improve your fun and safety afloat are invited to participate.

This two hour seminar is an informative, informal, hands-on presentation by a certified squadron instructor. Come learn and understand the basics of the US GPS navigation system, its satellites and our receivers. Learn how to operate your marine GPS receiver and see what the buttons do and what the screens show you. Learn how to access the functions you need for direct, waypoint and route navigation. See how to store waypoints for easier access and how to activate them for navigation. Learn the principles of waypoint navigation, why we use it and how easy it is to plan and follow safe routes. Learn to use your GPS to keep you on a safe, pre-qualified course

Come and learn how to relate the GPS displays and information to your paper charts and the safe water areas. We will also discuss some tips for choosing a GPS or GPS / Chartplotter.
