Barn Find to Blue Ribbon

In honor of the 60th anniversary of the Corvette, the speedway will have a special display of more than 20 Corvettes in the Showcase Pavilion. One car fans will be able to view is a 1954 white Corvette, which is now 98.5 percent correct after going through quite the journey over the last few years.

Tommy Loftin’s wife Brenda found a 1954 Corvette in their neighbor’s garage and they started restoring it in 2011. After getting assistance from friends, they began restoring the car and entered it into the National Corvette Restorers Society awards program. According to the criteria, the Loftins had three years to get the car to the top level award, “The Duntov Mark of Excellence.”

Loftin entered the program and completed all four award processes. His first award was the Top Flight award from the Carolinas Chapter of NCRS after getting the car to 96.6 percent correct and then the Regional Top Flight award, with 97.8 percent correctness. The next level was the grueling Performance Verification Award, a pass-or-fail judging, that he achieved in September 2012. Finally, Loftin and his wife achieved the highest honor, The Duntov, for their Corvette just this past July at the NCRS Nationals in Hampton, Va., which is held only once per year.

“I would like to thank all who have helped with our 1954 barn find and all my Corvette friends who have cheered us on as we have journeyed through this climb to the top,” said Loftin. “Their encouragement is what helped make it happen and having the faith that the car was worthy of the climb.”

Loftin is also the automotive director of the Queen City Corvette Club, one of four Corvette clubs that will participate in the Sept. 19-22 AutoFair.
