Kelva Atkins Headlines UNCW Award Winners

Kelva Atkins was named Second-Team All-CAA and CAA All-Academic Team as the league announced out its annual awards Wednesday

ARLINGTON, VA Mar. 12, 2014 – UNCW junior guard Kelva Atkins was named Second-Team All-CAA and also earned All-Academic Team accolades as the Colonial Athletic Association handed out its annual awards Wednesday during the league’s pre-tournament banquet.

Senior Diana Venezia and freshman Brie Mobley were also recognized as Mobley was selected to the All-Rookie Team while Venezia was chosen as the team’s Dean Ehler’s Award recipient.

Atkins earned All-CAA distinction for the first time in her career after a stellar junior campaign that saw the Stem, N.C., product lead the Seahawks in scoring (15.1), assists (3.2) and steals (2.1) while ranking second on the squad in rebounds (5.3). A Preseason First-Team All-CAA selection, Atkins enters the conference tournament as one of only two players in the CAA to rank among the top 20 players in the league in points (5th), rebounds (18th), steals (4th) and assists (8th).

In the classroom, Atkins is a Recreation Sport Leadership major with a 3.1 cumulative GPA. She was named to the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll for the 2012-13 season.

Mobley, meanwhile, garnered All-Rookie Team accolades following an outstanding rookie season that placed her second on the team in scoring (11.6), third in assists (1.6) and steals (1.6) and fourth in rebounding (4.3). A two-time CAA Rookie-of-the-Week selection, Mobley reached double figures in points on 16 occasions, including a season-high 29 points in the regular season finale at College of Charleston on March 5 to match Gwen Austin for the fifth highest single-game scoring performance by a UNCW freshman.

A native of Westfield, N.J., Venezia was recognized as the program’s Dean Ehlers Award recipient, which is presented annually to a women’s basketball student-athlete from each member institution who “embodies the highest standards of leadership, integrity and sportsmanship in conjunction with her academic athletic achievement.” An Exercise Science major, Venezia is a two-time CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll honoree (2011 & 2013) and has been active in the team’s community service projects throughout her four-year career. She has also served as a team captain for the 2013-14 season.

Ninth-seeded UNCW opens the 2014 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship Thursday with a 2 p.m. contest against eighth-seeded William & Mary at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.
