Hat-Trick By FC Edmonton Forward Daryl Fordyce Earns Him North American Soccer League Player Of Week 9 Honors
NEW YORK, NY June 9, 2014 – Forward Daryl Fordyce scored three times to lead FC Edmonton a 6-1 home victory over the Carolina RailHawks to close out the 2014 NASL Spring Season on Sunday. The Northern Ireland native’s hat-trick earned him NASL Player of the Week 9 honors.
“I want to thank my teammates, most importantly, for working so hard during the game,” said Fordyce, who’s currently tied for first in league goals with five. “My goals were just the product of the entire team’s work. The most important thing is that we got the win and everyone is exciting for the next season.”
Fordyce opened the scoring for the Eddies with a header off a cross from defender Lance Laing just 31 seconds into the game, the fastest goal in this NASL Spring Season.
After Edmonton added two more goals, Fordyce notched his second of the match just before halftime for a 4-0 advantage. Fordyce would complete the hat-trick in the 75th minute of the second half.
FC Edmonton coach, Colin Miller praised Fordyce after the game: “I am delighted to see Daryl score his first hat-trick with FC Edmonton and get Player of the Week. We had some talks with him in training about playing in the box more to really take advantage of his ability to finish, and I’m glad to see that he listened and it paid off. His contribution to the match and the team on Sunday was fantastic.”
Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Fordyce has played in the Under-21 and U-19 sides for his native country from 2005-2008. He started playing with a youth soccer team at St. Andrew’s school in Belfast. From the ages of 11 to 16, he played with Glasgow Rangers and their youth side in Scotland. When he was 16, he moved to English club Portsmouth FC, where at the age of 18, he signed his first professional contract with the squad at the age of 18. He then came back to Belfast to play for Glentoran FC for the next four years. After with the league with Glentoran FC, he moved to Linfield FC, Glentoran’s biggest rivals in Belfast, where he won the league and cup double in his first season.
