CHARLESTON, SC July 23, 2014 – Charleston’s Aug. 3 match at the Montreal Impact Reserves — the Battery’s final regular-season match against a Reserve League team from an MLS club — has been rescheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 28, the clubs announced Wednesday.
Montreal Impact management approached the Battery last week about rescheduling the Aug. 3rd fixture, which became a problem for the Canadian team when the schedule for CONCACAF Champions League was announced.
The Impact first team is scheduled to play a home match against rivals Toronto FC on Sunday, Aug. 3, at 5 p.m., and the club had scheduled its Reserve side’s USL PRO match against Charleston for 2 p.m. as part of a double-header at Stade Saputo. But with the team now scheduled to face Salvadoran club C.D. FAS in Montreal on Aug. 5, its management worried that this would put undue stress on its roster.
Moving the Charleston at Montreal match up to July 28th required rescheduling the original Impact Reserves’ July 28th fixture with Charlotte Eagles. The Impact/Eagles match has been provisionally rescheduled for Sept. 1.
Since Major League Soccer and USL PRO signed their historic cooperation agreement in January 2013, Reserve League teams from MLS have played against USL PRO clubs in matches that counted in the regular-season standings for both leagues. But with the MLS Reserve League coming to a close at the end of the 2014 season, this unique arrangement is rapidly coming to a close.
Charleston drew the New York Red Bulls Reserves at Blackbaud in April, and swept the Houston Dynamo Reserves in 2013. The match against Montreal will conclude the Battery’s MLS Reserves history.
“We always try to cooperate with other clubs, so long as we can do it in a way that doesn’t harm our team,” said Battery President Andrew Bell. “We reviewed a number of different scenarios with Montreal and USL PRO, and in the end this was the solution we reached.”
The Battery host Arizona United SC on Saturday, July 26. They’ll depart Sunday for Montreal, play the Impact Reserves on Monday morning, and return to Charleston directly after the match. Then, after a short week of training in Charleston, the team will fly to Rochester for a match against the Rhinos on Friday, Aug. 1.
After the away matches at Montreal and Rochester on July 28 and Aug. 1, five of the Battery’s final seven matches will be at Blackbaud Stadium: Friday, Aug. 8, vs. Dayton; Wednesday, Aug. 13 vs. Orange County; Friday, Aug. 15 vs. Rochester; Saturday, Aug. 30 vs. Pittsburgh, and Friday, Sept. 5 vs. Harrisburg.
The team’s final road trip takes it to expansion clubs Oklahoma City on Sunday, Aug. 24, and Sacramento on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
