AL DICKENS, IV (L) AND DAVID DONOVAN, IV (R) ADVANCE TO NC AMATEUR MATCH PLAY FINAL

Unless your last name starts with a “D” and you are the fourth generation in a family name then you had no chance to advance to the North Carolina Amateur Match Play championship finals.

Al Dickens, IV of Charlotte will face David Donovan, IV of Hampstead on Sunday morning at River Landing.

Dickens, IV a redshirt junior at East Carolina cruised past Stanhope Johnson, Jr. of Greensboro 5 and 3 in the quarterfinals. Then he faced rising College of Charleston freshman Philip Oweida of Charlotte in a tight semifinal match-up. Dickens, IV held a narrow 1 up lead from holes 4 thru 15. Oweida holed a birdie on #16 to square the match. Hole 7 halved with par threes. Both players had long birdie putts on the 18th hole. Oweida was first to play but narrowly missed his birdie attempt leaving Dickens, IV a putt to win. Dickens, IV rolled in his 30-foot putt to win the match.

On the other side of the bracket, Donovan, IV, a rising senior at Lenoir-Rhyne University, needed all 18 holes to slip past Jonathan Jackson of Chapel Hill by a 1 up score. Donovan, IV faced Wake Forest University senior Cyrus Stewart of Raleigh in the semifinal. It was a see-saw battle that had three lead changes. Donovan, IV took command of the match by winning holes 12 thru 15 to secure a 4 and 3 win.

More rain fell in the Wallace area overnight and throughout the day forcing tournament officials to continue playing the course as a 3075 yard 18-hole par 54 course.
