CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men’s basketball team will open the 2014 Puerto Rico Tip-Off with defending national champion Connecticut. The in-season tournament will be held on Nov. 20-21 & 23 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The eighth annual event will not only feature CofC and UConn, but Boston College, Dayton, George Mason, New Mexico, Texas A&M and West Virginia. The Cougars will face the Huskies in the opening round on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 12:30 p.m. (ET) on ESPNU. The winner or loser will move on to the next round against Texas A&M or 2014 NCAA Elite Eight participant Dayton on Friday, Nov. 21.
This is the second consecutive year Charleston will meet the defending national champion on its non-conference slate having opened the 2013-14 season at Louisville. New Mexico (NCAA), West Virginia (NIT) and Texas A&M (CBI) also advanced to postseason play a year ago.
The three-day, 12-game bracketed event will be played at Coliseo Roberto Clemente for the second-straight season with ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3 presenting the games live nationally from the Caribbean Island. The final two Puerto Rico Tip-Off contests on Nov. 23, including the championship game, will be showcased on ESPN2.
CofC is one of four schools in this year’s tournament that will make its second appearance in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The Cougars last played in Puerto Rico in 2007. They will also play a non-bracketed game at West Virginia on Saturday, Nov. 29 at a time still to be determined in Morgantown, W. Va.
The remainder of College of Charleston’s 2014-15 non-conference and conference schedule will be announced at a later date. For more information about the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, please visit the tournament website at: http://www.puertoricotipoff.com
