Charleston improved to 25-24 in the second half and 58-61 overall. Rome dropped to 21-28 and 45-74, respectively. The RiverDogs also took a 2-1 advantage in this four-game series.

A quick two-out rally in the first inning gave Charleston a 2-0 advantage. Michael O’Neill opened the contest with a single. Two batters later, Dustin Fowler recorded a single of his own. Andujar doubled to drive in both runners and put the RiverDogs in front.

Rome sliced its deficit in half during the bottom of the second. Jacob Schrader hit a leadoff double before Carlos Franco earned a single. Connor Lien was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a lineout from Sal Giardina, Alejandro Piloto brought in Schrader with a groundout.

RiverDogs starting pitcher Andy Beresford closed a strong outing by retiring the final nine batters that he faced, dating back to Rome’s scoring opportunity in the second inning. He did not qualify for the decision, but he only allowed two hits and one run in four frames.

Both bullpens opened to stellar scoreless work in Saturday’s contest. After Braves starting pitcher Yean Carlos Gil was replaced after five innings, including five strikeouts, Michael Swanner and Matt Sims each escaped jams by stranding multiple runners on base. Charleston’s Angel Rincon relieved Beresford and tossed three shutout innings and gave up just one hit.

Eric Ruth covered the final two innings to seal a wire-to-wire win for the RiverDogs. He allowed a leadoff single to Giardina in the eighth inning before striking out the next three batters. After Charleston left the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, Ruth kept the Braves scoreless to protect a one-run lead and secure the victory.

Rincon garnered the victory to move up to 4-3. Gil was handed the loss, falling to 5-6. Ruth grabbed his fourth save in as many tries, remaining perfect in save opportunities this season.

COMING UP: The finale of this four-game series will take place at 2pm on Sunday. Charleston LHP Justin Kamplain (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is scheduled to pitch against Rome LHP Chris Diaz (0-0, 2.63 ERA).
