DATAW ISLAND, SC August 11, 2014 – First round results of the 37th Carolinas Women’s Four-Ball Championship hosted by Dataw Island Club (Cotton Dike Course) on Monday, August 11, 2014. Par 36-36—72 5735 yards (Rating: 72.7/129).
Hayley Hammond of Mooresville, NC and Lea Venable of Simpsonville, SC shot a five under par round of 67 to take the lead by two strokes over Chandler Case of Rock Hill, SC and Cayla Smith of Easley, SC. The Hammond-Venable duo carded five birdies on the day. “Hayley (Hammond) had five birdies and I had 18 pars,” laughed Venable. Hammond then replied “I wanted to give Lea a stress free day.” The two-some are looking to avenge their lost last year in this championship after losing in a sudden death playoff. Both Hammond and Venable are past CGA champions but they have yet to win this championship together. “Hopefully this will finally be our year,” said Hammond.
In the tournament division, Beverly Cassels and Laura Gilchrist both of Charlotte, NC had a three under par round of 69 along with the team of Rhonda Williams of Rocky Mount, NC and Carolyn Jordan of Windsor, NC. This division plays a shorter course.
Teams were pre-flighted within their chosen division using 2/3 of the lowest handicap index added to 1/3 of the highest handicap index.
