Results of The Asheville Wine and Food Festival Wine Competition

ASHEVILLE, NC August 20, 2014 – The French Broad Vignerons announce the results of the Asheville Wine and Food Festival Wine Competition. These wines were evaluated by teams of trained judges who tasted and rated the wines submitted for the 2014 Asheville Wine and Food Festival. Wines were evaluated using a modified version of the UC – Davis wine evaluation protocol. Each wine was tasted by two panels of judges to assure quality of evaluation. Those wines earning Gold or Silver medals became the first wines named Best Of The Appalachians (BOTA) by the Vignerons.

Many of the medal wines are made in small wineries that self distribute or sell their wines only at the winery. At each winery website, interested people can start to explore the tremendous adventure that exists with regional wines in general and BOTA wines in particular. It is also possible to order wines on-line through the individual websites.

By going to the winery it is possible to chat with the winemaker and learn about how they make their wines and taste other wines produced at the winery. Many of the small wineries feature wines produced using the vigneron experience – they grow their own grapes, harvest them, and make their own wine directly on site. The vigneron experience is a major feature of our regional products and it is a way in which winemakers control their entire product.

Some BOTA wines may also be ordered through the North Carolina Wine Gift website – www.northcarolinawinegifts.com. This company specializes in wines primarily from boutique wineries that use only North Carolina grapes and create their wines within North Carolina. This means that those wines from outside of North Carolina would need to be obtained at the winery or on their website. North Carolina Wine Gifts offers wines through their wine club and through their on-line store.

Medal wines and their wineries are listed at frenchbroadvignerons.org in the BOTA and WINE EVALUATION section. Look for the BOTA certificate displayed in the tasting room and ask for the BOTA wine by name. Because each consumer’s taste may vary it is wise to sample the range of wines at every winery. Even if a BOTA designated wine is not in a customer’s taste range, they can be assured that they are tasting a quality wine worthy of sampling. That is why going to wineries can be an adventure – a customer can find local wines that they enjoy and may not have thought of tasting or buying before the visit.

The French Broad Vignerons will conduct other commercial wine competitions in the near future. Commercial winemakers interested in submitting wines are asked to contact Pete Fland, President of the French Broad Vignerons to assure that they will be notified of the next submission process. Contact should be made by email to petefland@frenchbroadvignerons.org.
