Rookie Davis bookends his 2014 campaign with road wins at Augusta

AUGUSTA, GA August 29, 2014 – Rookie Davis posted a career-high nine strikeouts in a quality start, leading the Charleston RiverDogs to a 6-1 victory against the Augusta GreenJackets on Friday evening at Lake Olmstead Stadium in South Atlantic League action. Michael O’Neill led the RiverDogs offense with three hits while also scoring a run and driving in another.
The RiverDogs jumped up to 36-31 in the second half and 69-68 overall. The GreenJackets fell to 27-40 and 61-74, respectively. Charleston evened the season series at eight wins apiece and garnered a 1-0 edge in this four-game series.
In the first inning, the GreenJackets grabbed a quick 1-0 lead. Chris Lofton led off with a single and advanced on a pair of groundouts. Lofton scored from third base on a wild pitch by Davis.
Charleston tied the contest at 1-1 in the top of the third. Tyler Wade singled against Augusta’s Christian Jones to start the frame. After a strikeout, an error on a force attempt allowed Wade to reach third base. Another error helped Wade score the game-tying run.
The RiverDogs built a three-run lead by scoring in the fifth and sixth innings. O’Neill’s bunt single opened the fifth inning. Three batters later, O’Neill scored on a sacrifice fly from Yeicok Calderon. In the sixth, Wade brought in Eduardo de Oleo with a groundout before O’Neill singled to drive in Claudio Custodio, giving the RiverDogs a 4-1 advantage.
Davis wrapped up his third career quality start with a phenomenal string of strikeouts. He struck out eight of the final 12 batters that he faced, including four consecutive batters in that stretch. This is also expected to be Davis’ final appearance of the season, which started on April 3 with a victory on Opening Day at Augusta.
Charleston scored twice in the ninth inning to stretch the lead to 6-1. Jackson Valera began the inning with a double and scored on a one-out double by Brandon Thomas. Following a strikeout, Thomas scored during a de Oleo single.
A victory improved Davis’ record to 7-8 this season. Davis took four straight winning decisions to close his year. Jones slipped to 5-9 after taking a loss.
