Uptown Charlotte Welcomes Race for the Cure® and the Chicago Bears Oct. 4-5, 2014

CHARLOTTE, NC August 27, 2014 – Fans of Carolina Panthers star running back DeAngelo Williams will be busy in uptown Charlotte the weekend of Oct. 4-5. On Saturday, Williams Warriors, inspired by Williams and his late mother Sandra Hill, will participate in the 18th Annual Susan G. Komen Charlotte Race for the Cure®. On Sunday, Oct. 5, attention will shift to Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium as the Panthers and Williams host the Chicago Bears.   DeAngelo Williams has a personal connection to the Komen cause, losing his mother and four aunts, Sandra Hill’s sisters, to breast cancer. FOUR OAKS, NC August 22, 2014 – The sounds of artillery and musket fire will once again ring out at Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site. The annual summer living history program, “A Day in the Life of a Civil War Soldier,”will be held Saturday, Aug. 23. Costumed living historians will demonstrate how soldiers made meals, maintained their weapons, equipment and uniforms, trained for battle, withstood the weather and much more. MIDLAND, NC August 20, 2014 – Thousands of miners flocked to the nation’s first documented gold find, not in the hills of California, but in the piedmont of North Carolina. In 1799, a shiny and heavy rock found by little Conrad Reed and used for a doorstop was, in reality, a 17-pound gold nugget. Once identified, the news spread and the Carolina Gold Rush was on.   The Reed farm is now the popular Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site where visitors can still pan for gold through October. ASHEVILLE, NC August 20, 2014 – The French Broad Vignerons announce the results of the Asheville Wine and Food Festival Wine Competition. These wines were evaluated by teams of trained judges who tasted and rated the wines submitted for the 2014 Asheville Wine and Food Festival. Wines were evaluated using a modified version of the UC – Davis wine evaluation protocol. Each wine was tasted by two panels of judges to assure quality of evaluation. Those wines earning Gold or Silver medals became the first wines named Best Of The Appalachians (BOTA) by the Vignerons.
