Surf City steps out with Gun Safety Camps for kids

SURF CITY, NC July 22, 2014 – Surf City Parks & Recreation is taking aim with two Gun Safety Camps for youths ages 9-14, with activities taking place within 15 hour course based at the Surf City Community Center. The camp dates are July 28 to August 1 and August 11 – 15. The camp beginning July 28 will run from 1 pm – 4 pm and the camp starting August 11 will run from 9 am to 12 Noon. Caleb Sturgeon Earns Trip to U.S. Amateur with Sectional Qualifier Win

ROCKY MOUNT, NC July 22, 2014 — South Carolina senior Caleb Sturgeon qualified for the 114th U.S. Amateur Championship on Monday by winning a sectional qualifier at Benvenue Country Club. Sturgeon won the qualifier with a 36-hole total of 131 (-13), firing rounds of 65 (-7) and 66 (-6). Patrick Cover of Huntersville, N.C., finished runner-up with a total of 135 (-9). A native of Laurens, S.C., Sturgeon will be making his first appearance at the U.S. Amateur Championship. Entry Deadline Aug. 6; 18-Hole Qualifiers to be Held at 51 Sites from Aug. 2014-March 2015 FAR HILLS, NJ July 22, 2014 – The United States Golf Association (USGA) today announced sectional qualifying sites for the 2015 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship, to be held at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif., May 2-6, 2015. Conducted over 18 holes, sectional qualifying will be held at 51 sites across the United States from Aug. 13, 2014, to March 31, 2015. ROCKY MOUNT, NC July 21, 2014 – Final results from U.S. Amateur Championship sectional qualifying hosted by Benvenue Country Club in Rocky Mount, NC on Monday, July 21, 2014 (6555 yards, par 36-36—72, Rating: 71.8/137). Three qualifying spots and two alternate positions are available at this qualifying site.   Caleb Sturgeon from Laurens, SC shot a two round total of 13-under 131 to earn medalist honors. Huntersville, NC native Patrick Cover fired a 9-under 135 to also qualify.  Thomas Bradshaw (136) and Beau Cutts (136) played off for the last qualifying position. Treyburn CC     Durham, NC Final Results GOLDSBORO, NC July 21, 2014 – Clarence Rose and Nicholas Adams of Goldsboro, NC blitzed Treyburn CC firing a round of eight under par 64 to win the 9th Carolinas Pro-Junior title by three shots.  Playing a modified alternate shot format, Rose and Adams had a bogey free round on the 6,775 yard Tom Fazio designed course.  Andrew Shuck and Hughes Edwards of Charlotte, NC finished in second place with a five under par 67.  Nicholas Poole and Rick Murphy of Greensboro shot three under par 69 to take third place. Duke Energy Awards $50, 000 for Educational Travel Grants & Free Teacher Workshops

RALEIGH, NC July 21, 2014 – The N.C. Museum of History announces that Duke Energy Education Travel Grants will be available this fall to help cover part of transportation costs to the museum for public schools in central and eastern North Carolina. The travel grants are made possible by a $50,000 investment from Duke Energy through the Duke Energy Foundation. In addition to transportation grants, Duke Energy will award 100 tuition-free, online professional development workshops for classroom teachers across North Carolina. The museum offers eight different online courses throughout the year, and North Carolina educators can earn up to 40 contact hours of continuing education credits for each class completed.
