Marine debris is a problem that continues to grow.  Our waterways and oceans are constantly polluted with a wide variety of marine debris ranging from polystyrene trays and plastic bags to derelict fishing equipment and abandoned boats. Marine life, such as several Fish species, Whales, Sharks, Sea Turtles, and Birds have been known to ingest marine debris or become entangled in marine debris, which may lead to injury, intestinal blockage, and death.  Marine debris is an Eastern North Carolina concern not only because of the threats to our native wildlife, our ecosystem and our own health, but it also washes up on beaches and shorelines degrading the environment, and effecting our local economy and tourism. NC Wildlife Commission Schedules Shooting Range Re-Opening Event

ELLERBE, NC Nov. 6, 2014 — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has scheduled a re-opening event at its recently renovated shooting range at the John F. Lentz Hunter Education Complex this Saturday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The “Veteran’s Day Kickoff,” which is free and open to the public, celebrates the re-opening of the shooting range. Activities will include trap, rifle, archery, pistol and 3D archery shooting, as well as a Wildlife Enforcement Officer shooting demonstration. A catered barbeque lunch, provided by Valentine Land and Timber, will be served at noon. Tournament format is 18 holes of four-ball stroke play, both gross and net.  90 percent of a player’s course handicap is used to determine net scores. Wildlife Resources Commission will host 11 hunting mentor seminars statewide in September to network with experienced hunters and share information about mentoring new hunters. The Wildlife Commission created the new “Hunting Mentor Seminars” to build on the popularity of free, skills-based hunting seminars that the Commission has been offering to the public since 2011. Pechmann Fishing Education Center’s staff expects the transition to go smoothly when programming expands from hook-and-line workshops about fishing to hook-and-bullet workshops that cover both fishing and hunting. Encouraged by the popularity of hunting workshops in the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s headquarters in Raleigh, the Wildlife Commission is partnering with the Cape Fear River Branch chapter of the Quality Deer Management Association to offer a free, introductory workshop on deer hunting, Aug. 23, at the Pechmann Center in Fayetteville.
