Marine debris is a problem that continues to grow.  Our waterways and oceans are constantly polluted with a wide variety of marine debris ranging from polystyrene trays and plastic bags to derelict fishing equipment and abandoned boats. Marine life, such as several Fish species, Whales, Sharks, Sea Turtles, and Birds have been known to ingest marine debris or become entangled in marine debris, which may lead to injury, intestinal blockage, and death.  Marine debris is an Eastern North Carolina concern not only because of the threats to our native wildlife, our ecosystem and our own health, but it also washes up on beaches and shorelines degrading the environment, and effecting our local economy and tourism. GREENVILLE, NC Nov. 4, 2014 —The American Red Cross asks eligible donors to make an appointment to give blood to help ensure sufficient blood supplies are available for patients this holiday season. Blood donations often decline during the holidays when donors get busy with travel and family gatherings, but the need for blood remains steady. Someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds.   Eligible donors with all types are needed, especially those with O negative, A negative and B negative. MOREHEAD CITY NC August 5, 2014 – The Marlins’ 2014 season wrapped up on Monday evening with a rainout in their scheduled game against the Wilmington Sharks. Morehead City finished up the season with a 19-31 record overall, but a 14-9 record in the second half, which was good for third place in the CPL East. Morehead City’s torrid second half was fueled by a stretch of games from June 30 to July 25 when they won 15 of 18 games and had two separate five-game winning streaks. MOREHEAD CITY, NC August 4, 2014 – Tonight’s season finale against the Wilmington Sharks has been canceled due to inclement weather and poor field conditions. The game will not be rescheduled. Monday’s rainout is the fourth straight, and the 10th overall for the Marlins this season (11 counting the Team USA game that was canceled on June 28). Anybody holding tickets to any of the canceled games will be given a full refund at the Marlins’ office, which is located at 5-8-D Evans Street. Matt Tindall, who had been three for three in save opportunities, came on to attempt to secure the final three outs for Morehead City. MOREHEAD CITY, NC July 28, 2014 – The Marlins lost their second straight game Sunday—a 19-8 defeat at the hands of the Columbia Blowfish in a game that featured five home runs, five hit by pitches, a position player pitching, and relief pitchers batting. The Blowfish scored nine times in the eighth inning off relievers Scott Edge and Michael Barber, which made it a 17-5 game at the time. PETERSBURG, VA July 25, 2014 – Morehead City won its fifth straight game on Friday night against Petersburg when Tyler Thorne’s seven-inning effort and a nine-run outburst led by Trent Leimkuehler’s pinch-hit grand slam propelled them to a 9-1 victory over the Generals. Thorne had his best outing of the season on Friday, completing seven shutout innings and yielding just five hits to the Generals.
