Marine debris is a problem that continues to grow.  Our waterways and oceans are constantly polluted with a wide variety of marine debris ranging from polystyrene trays and plastic bags to derelict fishing equipment and abandoned boats. Marine life, such as several Fish species, Whales, Sharks, Sea Turtles, and Birds have been known to ingest marine debris or become entangled in marine debris, which may lead to injury, intestinal blockage, and death.  Marine debris is an Eastern North Carolina concern not only because of the threats to our native wildlife, our ecosystem and our own health, but it also washes up on beaches and shorelines degrading the environment, and effecting our local economy and tourism. LOUISBURG, NC Oct. 20, 2014 – The United States Air Force Concert Band will be performing on Saturday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Seby B. Jones Performing Arts Center on the Louisburg College campus. The Concert Band is the premier symphonic wind ensemble of the United States Air Force. Stationed at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C., it is the largest of six musical ensembles that comprise The United States Air Force Band. - 80,000 Fought at Bentonville Battlefield 150 Years Ago March 21-22 – FOUR OAKS, NC Sept. 2, 2014 – Thousands of military living historians from across the country will descend on Bentonville Battlefield March 21-22, 2015, to become Confederate and Union soldiers in the last major battle reenactment in the Civil War’s 150th anniversary commemoration. They will re-create one of the largest battle fought on North Carolina soil. The public is invited to watch all of the action. Nearly 5,000 re-enactors are expected for the two-day event. FOUR OAKS, NC August 22, 2014 – The sounds of artillery and musket fire will once again ring out at Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site. The annual summer living history program, “A Day in the Life of a Civil War Soldier,”will be held Saturday, Aug. 23. Costumed living historians will demonstrate how soldiers made meals, maintained their weapons, equipment and uniforms, trained for battle, withstood the weather and much more. Rare Civil War artifact returns to Hatteras for permanent exhibit at Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum

HATTERAS, NC August 21, 2014 – Through the generosity of the Keith Family Foundation, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum has acquired the silk ensign from the USS Monticello.  It is one of only three silk naval flags from this period known to exist and is the only one with the name of the ship, “Monticello”, and that of her commander, “Lieut. Daniel L. Braine” embroidered along the hoist. USS Monticello, a 655-ton wooden, screw-steamer, was built at Mystic, Connecticut, in 1859 for commercial use. Chartered by the Navy in May 1861, she was named Star for a few weeks and then resumed her original name, Monticello. She was purchased by the Navy in September 1861.
