WILMINGTON, NC July 16, 2014 — The American Red Cross encourages all eligible blood donors to make an appointment to donate blood soon to help prevent a shortage. During the summer months, on average, about two fewer donors give blood at each Red Cross blood drive than what is needed to meet the needs of patients. Vacations and summer activities are among the reasons regular donors may not find the time to give. But, patients don’t get a vacation from needing blood – the need is constant. Fulfilling a Recreational Request (NC Coastal Fishing Outing) of NC’s Wounded Warriors and Disabled Veterans   WINSTON-SALEM, NC July 16 - Operation North State (ONS), its supporters and volunteers are calling on North Carolina’s People, Places, Products and Pride to help support the 1st Annual Peer Fishin’ Festival. The event will be held Friday, October 17 at Ocean Crest Pier on Oak Island. ONS is hosting  300 Wounded Warriors, Disabled Veterans and their respective caregivers and/or friends to a great day of pier fishing and friendships. SOUTHPORT, NC June 6, 2014 – The 2013-14 class of Leadership Brunswick County (LBC) held their graduation ceremony on May 21, at South Brunswick Islands Center, a facility that is part of Brunswick Community College. The 13-14 class had eight members from Brunswick County who met monthly for the last nine months beginning in September 2013. LBC is an accelerated leadership training class for emerging leaders in the communities of Brunswick County. It is sponsored by Brunswick Community College, Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce, North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce, and Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce. SOUTHPORT, NC Feb. 21, 2014 – There are as many types of chowders as there will be those cooking at the Annual Chowder Cook-off on Sunday, March 9th from 1pm-4pm at the Oak Island Moose Lodge. Tips to Stay Safe during Winter Weather EASTERN, NC, Feb. 11, 2014 – As the southeast once again braces for winter storms, the Eastern NC Region of the American Red Cross is preparing to respond if needed.  Five teams of Red Cross shelter volunteers are on standby in the Cape Fear, Coastal Carolina and Onslow County Chapter areas in the event that shelters need to be opened.   Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) crews are also on standby to drive Red Cross disaster relief vehicles located in Wilmington, New Bern, Goldsboro, Rocky Mount, and Elizabeth City.  These vehicles can be mobilized to transport and distribute food, drinks, and supplies into disaster affected areas when travel becomes safe.
