CEREMONIES TO HONOR WORLD WAR II BRITISH AND CANADIAN SAILORS BURIED ON FOREIGN SOIL HATTERAS ISLAND, NC April 15, 2013 – Two ceremonies will be held in May to honor the sacrifices of foreign sailors who gave their lives during World War II protecting the coast of the United States. The British War Grave ceremonies will take place on May 9, at 11 a.m. at the British Cemetery in Buxton and on May 10, at 11 a.m. at the British Cemetery in Ocracoke. Roanoke Island, NC March 27, 2013 – In early March, an exceptional group of divers from northern Virginia took part in the N.C. Aquarium on Roanoke Island’s popular Shark Dive program. Wounded Warriors David Weiner, Jade Sharrocks, Ron Kellogg and Ernest Spycher, representing the U.S. Army, Marines and Navy, took the plunge into the Aquarium’s 285,000-gallon Graveyard of the Atlantic exhibit to the delight of spectators. Accompanying the group was their dive instructor and active duty Marine Eliseo Rodriguez and several close friends from Patriot Scuba. This selection of his recent work will be on view April 5 through June 28. Buckler’s passion for photography ignited when he began making compelling images of the natural world at age thirteen. He continued to hone his photographic skills for more than 20 years on his native Cape Cod and as a student at the University of Vermont. Roanoke Island, NC March 11, 2013 – After months of planning, the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is moving ahead with a new pier on Croatan Sound. The Aquarium recently awarded the building contract to Renaissance Construction of Manteo. The new sound-side pier is scheduled to be completed in June. The 200-foot-long structure provides convenient visitor access for the Aquarium’s popular on-the-water programs and includes a covered gazebo, seating, lower-level dock and environmentally friendly lighting. The lower dock is designed to allow easy water access for the Aquarium’s many ongoing outdoor educational programs, such as kayaking, fishing and crabbing, as well as provide opportunities for new water-based activities.
