Sept. 3, 2012 – Former East Carolina hurler Chris Heston has been named the 2012 Eastern League Pitcher-of-the-Year according to a release by the league office over the weekend. Heston’s Career Minor League Stats The 24-year old right-hander, who played for the Richmond Flying Squirrels in 2012, appeared in 25 games in his Double-A debut posting a 9-7 record with 130 strikeouts and a 2.13 ERA in 143.2 innings. Currently he leads the league in ERA, while ranking among the league leaders in WHIP (1.09-2nd), strikeouts (130-tied 4th), opponent’s batting average (.227-5th) and complete games (1-tied 10th). USL PRO Championship set for Saturday Wilmington, NC – The Wilmington Hammerheads have advanced to the 2012 USL PRO Championship after defeating defending USL PRO champions the Orlando City Lions on Friday night at the Florida Citrus Bowl in the semifinal round of the playoffs. The Hammerheads will play the Charleston Battery for the 2012 USL PRO Championship title on Saturday, September 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, SC. By Jim Morrill Charlotte Observer CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Nine weeks before the election, Republican Pat McCrory enjoys a double-digit lead over Democrat Walter Dalton in North Carolina’s gubernatorial race, according to an Elon University Poll released Monday. The poll, a partnership with the Observer and the News & Observer of Raleigh, also showed the economy contributing to Republican Mitt Romney’s 4-point lead over President Barack Obama in the state. Elon surveyed 1,089 likely voters from Aug. 25-30, during the Republican National Convention. In the governor’s race, McCrory led Dalton 52 percent to 37 percent.
