Tynita Butts Takes Seventh At 2012 Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. July 1, 2012 – Pirate All-America Tynita Butts cleared 1.84 meters in the high jump finals of the 2012 Olympic Trials Saturday night, finishing in a tie for seventh place and just missing making the American Olympic squad. The top three athletes booked their spots in London. After successfully reaching 1.79 meters on her first attempts, Butts jumped over the bar at 1.84 meters but could not set a new personal best when the bar was raised to 1.89 meters. American record holder Chaunte Lowe and two-time defending champion Brigetta Barrett jumped 2.01 meters to earn a berth to the Olympics and are joined by Amy Acuff, who cleared 1.95 meters to nab the last spot. Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville SwampDogs improved to 2-0 against the Catawba Valley Stars in 2012, defeating the CVCL team 12-11 in a wild contest at “The Swamp” on Saturday night. Fayetteville tallied nine hits and twelve runs in a game that saw both teams combine for nine errors. The Dogs were hit-by-pitch victims on eight separate occasions. After scoring three runs through the games’ first two innings, the Dogs batted around in the third frame, scoring eight runs. RALEIGH, NC – Doug Warf, Senior Director of Marketing for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes and Executive Director of the Kids ‘N Community Foundation, today announced that registration is now open for the 15th Annual Kids ‘N Community Golf Tournament presented by Volvo Construction Equipment. The 2012 tournament will take place at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary on Oct. 8, and will have an 11 a.m. shotgun start.   As in years past, Hurricanes players, coaches, broadcasters and management will join each participating foursome. GREENVILLE, N.C. June 29, 2012 – The East Carolina volleyball team will host two tournaments at Minges Coliseum for the first time since 2008 as part of its 2012 schedule, released Friday in its entirety by school officials. The slate also features 13 home matches and the return of the Conference USA Tournament which was last held in 2009. 2012 East Carolina Volleyball Schedule For the second consecutive campaign, ECU opens the year in Greenville, hosting Bethune-Cookman, Campbell and Charlotte Aug. 24-25 in the East Carolina Classic. Wilmington, NC – With a game time temperature of 96 degrees, everybody knew it was a hot night. What they didn’t know as Ross Whitley threw out the first pitch was how much the Wilmington Sharks (16-11) would heat up their bats in a 10-4 drubbing of the visiting Wilson Tobs (9-19). A graduate of Hoggard High School, Scott Coleman led the team in the win by going 3-for-5 at the plate including a double. He scored one run and drove in another. SwampDogs To Auction Special Military Shirts

Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville SwampDogs will auction off special Wounded Warrior Shirts at tonight’s game against Catawba Valley, with all proceeds benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project. The players will wear the shirts throughout the game, and fans can bid on the game-used tops in a silent auction that concludes with the games’ final out. The salute to the military has become a tradition at “The Swamp,” as a strong and stable partnership has been built between the team and the greater military community. Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville SwampDogs improved to 18-10 on the season by beating the Martinsville Mustangs 3-0 at home on Friday night. Layne Somsen (South Dakota State) was spectacular for the Dogs as the starter. The righty fanned nine Mustangs in seven innings of work, while only surrendering four runners over that stretch. The victory improves his record to 3-0 on the year as he as emerged as one of the premiere starters in the Coastal Plain League. MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – On a hot and humid evening at Big Rock Stadium, the Peninsula Pilots (12-15-1) took the CPL first half finale from the Morehead City Marlins (10-17) by a score of 9-5. The Pilots used a six-run second inning to propel them to a 6-0 lead that they never relinquished.
