MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins are happy to announce they are hosting the 2012 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team on Wednesday, June 27 at 7:05 p.m. at Big Rock Stadium. The Marlins are honored to be just one of five collegiate baseball teams in the country the National Team plays during their summer tour, and all four teams are members of the Coastal Plain League. Team USA plays the Fayetteville SwampDogs tonight, the Wilmington Sharks tomorrow night and travel to Morehead City on Wednesday. Columbia, SC – The Fayetteville SwampDogs swept the Columbia Blowfish in a doubleheader on Sunday night, improving their season record to 16-8 and 3-0 against the Blowfish on the year. The Dogs took the first game of the twin bill, 3-2, behind a strong pitching performance by Dan Smith (Monmouth) and some timely hitting. Sal Giardina (Lynn) ripped a base hit to plate Zach Gawrych (Tampa) in the first inning, as Gawrych extended his league-leading run total to 23 on the season. The Carolina Hurricanes will open the season with a six-game road trip beginning on Oct. 13 at Winnipeg, prior to their home opener at PNC Arena on Friday, Oct. 26, against the New York Rangers. MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (9-16) and Edenton Steamers (16-7) split a double-header Sunday evening at Big Rock Stadium, as the Marlins took game one by a score of 4-3 before the Steamers came back to win game two 8-2. In game one, the Marlins fell behind the Steamers 2-0 in the top of the first but came back quickly. MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (8-15) erased a five-run deficit with a five-run fifth inning and defeated the Petersburg Generals (10-12) 6-5 in 10 innings on Sal Annunziata’s walk-off double Saturday night at Big Rock Stadium. After the Marlins had two outs and nobody on in the tenth, Geoff DeGroot and Sam Ott worked back-to-back walks which set the scene for Annunziata to blast the game-winning double to center field.
