Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville SwampDogs improved to 14-8 on the season with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Columbia Blowfish on Saturday night. A packed house witnessed the ninth victory at home this year for the Dogs, as Fayetteville took the first meeting between the two clubs on the season. Andrew Parker (Towson) got the Dogs on the board with a two-run blast in the second inning, his first home run on the year. Carolina Hurricanes Select Nine Players on Day 2 of NHL Draft

RALEIGH, NC – The Carolina Hurricanes today completed their activities at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA, by selecting nine players in rounds 2-7. Carolina selected five forwards, two defensemen and two goaltenders on the draft’s second day after having traded the eighth overall pick to Pittsburgh on Friday in the deal that brought center Jordan Staal to the Hurricanes.   Carolina used its first of two second-round picks (38th overall) to select left wing Phil Di Giuseppe (5’11”, 197 lbs.) from the University of Michigan. Cougars Honored On SoCon Spring Academic All-Conference Team

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The College of Charleston had 15 student-athletes honored on the 2012 Southern Conference Spring Academic All-Conference Team released by the league office on Thursday.   The five-time SoCon champion CofC women’s tennis team had three of its own represented on the list in senior Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C.), junior Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) and sophomore Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.). Wilson, NC – The Fayetteville SwampDogs improved to 13-8 on the season when they defeated the Wilson Tobs 3-0 at Fleming Stadium on Friday night. Despite a rain delay that lasted nearly an hour and a half, the Dogs remained focused and avenged their loss to the Tobs from the night prior. Jimmie Davis (UNC-Pembroke) was spectacular in relief, as he replaced starter Max McDonald after the rain delay. He worked six scoreless innings and recorded four strikeouts. Florence, S.C. – Despite Wilmington (13-10) defense stranding 15 Florence RedWolves (8-12) runners on base, the visiting Sharks fell 3-0 at American Legion Stadium. The Wilmington Sharks threatened to bite first in the second inning after they loaded the bases with nobody out. However, a ground ball back to the pitcher started a rare double play that went from pitcher to catcher to first baseman. The Pirates inked six male and three female student-athletes for the upcoming season. Justinas Bilis, Alex Clark, Tyler Goulden, Shawn Hunter, Austin Taylor and Nathan Walters will join the men’s team, while Alexandra Doonis, Susan Justis and Sara Morgan Pou are set to join the women’s team. RALEIGH, NC – Kyle Prairie, Director of Ticket Sales for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced the team’s mini-season ticket plans for the 2012-13 season. Mini-season ticket plan-holders can opt for a 26-game plan, or choose between three different 12-game plans.   The 26-game plan covers more than half of the Hurricanes’ home schedule, and includes the team’s home opener on Oct. 26 against the New York Rangers.
