WILMINGTON, NC, May 26, 2012 – Powerful storms are churning in the Atlantic Ocean, increasing the risk of powerful rip currents along the East Coast over the next few days. The American Red Cross advises anyone visiting eastern shore points to swim only on lifeguard-protected beaches, within the designated swimming areas. Hurricane Beryl will affect parts of the east this memorial day weekend. Dangerous surf conditions are possible along the NC coast including the Cape Fear area. There is a moderate rip current risk at the beaches today. The risk for more powerful and frequent rip currents will increase Saturday night and Sunday as Beryl draws closer to the southeast coast. Transportation Museum Hosts Rare Steam Program Excursions June 16-17

SPENCER, NC – For the first time since 1994, you can ride behind a real coal-fired steam locomotive on mainline tracks in North Carolina when the N.C. Transportation Museum hosts passenger train excursions June 16 and 17.  Part of the 21st Century Steam program, the trips are being offered in cooperation with Norfolk Southern Corp. and the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. Three one and a half hour round trip journeys will be offered each day from the N.C. Transportation Museum to the town of Barber, N.C. and back. Power will be a genuine Southern Railway steam locomotive, No. 630, built in 1904 and once used to pull freight trains in North Carolina. RALEIGH – The State Capitol will host a living history event to demonstrate what life was like for citizens of Raleigh living on the Civil War home front in the summer of 1862. The free event will take place Saturday, June 9, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Visitors can visit a re-created Confederate post office, learn about Raleigh’s several hospitals from a re-enactor playing the part of a surgeon, or attend a soldiers’ benefit concert in the historic House Chamber performed by the Huckleberry Brothers string band.
