Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville SwampDogs saw their first half division title hopes fade as they lost to the Edenton Steamers 10-9 on Thursday night. The two teams combined for six home runs, the highest single-game total in the Coastal Plain League this season. The Dogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st when both Sal Giardina (Lynn) and Reed Harper (Austin Peay) picked up RBI singles. Edenton hit two of their four home runs in the bottom half of the frame, knotting the game up at 2 runs apiece. Spencer Hampton Loses Battle Against Cancer

GREENVILLE, N.C. June 29, 2012 – Spencer Hampton, a former East Carolina University football player whose determined rise from walk-on status culminated with a Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl victory in 2007 and a Conference USA title in 2008, died early Friday following a brief illness. Hampton, 25, was diagnosed with stage four melanoma earlier this spring. After enjoying a notable prep career at Greenville’s D.H. Conley High School, Hampton completed walk-on tryouts and earned a roster position in then-head coach Skip Holtz’ program during the fall of 2006. RALEIGH, N.C. (June 29, 2012) – Progress Energy is urging customers be on alert for a new utility bill payment scam affecting customers across the country. Scammers claim that President Obama will pay customers’ utility bills through a new federal program. Progress Energy has received reports of customers who have been contacted about this scam in its Carolinas and Florida service territories. According to the Better Business Bureau, customers have been contacted in person and through fliers, social media and text messages with claims that President Obama is providing credits or applying payments to utility bills. RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Museum of History Associates is pleased to announce the appointment of William “Billy” Wilson as Executive Director, effective July 1. Wilson’s duties will include leading efforts to expand membership in the Associates across the state, implementing events to diversify and increase the organization’s funding base, and overseeing the successful retail shop at the North Carolina Museum of History. Lyn Maness has ably served as Interim Executive Director during this transition. A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, Wilson served as an independent contractor with the Associates before becoming the group’s Associate Director in 2008. The Cleveland Cavaliers tabbed Peterson in the seventh round of the 1985 draft.
